Dragon 1/35 Panzer I Funk(y)

Thought I'd bang another one out for the GB.
Gotta try and keep up with Alex, lol!

I saw a friend build this and I really liked it, so off to shops I went. It cost me £40! When you open the box there's a lot of plastic, but this thing is only about 5" long!!

Anyways, here's some pics.

Boxart and sprues, bit of photo etch and a bag of the smallest track links I've ever seen!

Wheels on.

I'll bet she's got an interior too.
Paul's right about those tracks... teeny tiny.

You're right about the interior Coen. However, as this will be buttoned up, I'm not going to fit it. Not being lazy, but the radios look so good that I'm going to use them on another project where they can be seen.

The missing interior!

Front and rear decks. There's some nice smoke candles on the rear deck but you can't see them in this pick.

Hull rear detail and some breakdown kit.

This is all going together great guns so far, apart from the fact that this doesn't have any guns,lol!
I just hope the tracks behave as well as the rest of the kit!

I believe he did a Pz II build, and he built a Panzerjager 1, which I think is based off this chassis.

Build is coming on nicely mate. I look forward to seeing it progress.

Some more progress pics.
I swapped the kit antenna for some thin brass to make it look a bit more to scale.

That's the main assy done, I'll see about scratching some little extras to add some detail later.

For some reason it doesn't look very good in this pic, looks nicer in reality, (honest!)

So next I'm making a start on the dreaded tracks, they're tiny!
I've watched qdc's vids on YouTube, he makes it look so easy! I couldn't get the links to stay still, they were pinging off all over the place!
I ended up putting them on a strip of masking tape, sticky side up, which seems to be working so far.

Ps, I actually measured it the other day (the tank that is) and its only 4 1/2" long. Smallest 1/35 kit I've ever done!

More progress pics (yawn!)

My desk was invaded by some kind of tank spider!

Got the tracks done, bit of a pain but I'm sure it'll get easier with practice!

Knocked up a tarp from kitchen roll soaked in clear, and a toolbox from evergreen and PE sprue.

And a tow rope from thread with foil crimps.

Remember this? This was my first attempt at a base for the 1/48 Sdkfz 222. But it turned out a bit over scale, so I'm gonna use it for this build instead.

^ I was going to try and make one from miliput but as I was in lazy mode: rolled up some kitchen roll, wrapped some thin wire around to simulate the rope. Then gave it a liberal coating of clear, and left it to dry. Then just painted straight on it. It still absorbed the paint, but I think it gives a nice textured look?

It does, that tarps looks nice

Model is coming along nicely!
And yes, I remember that airclay cobbel road.... can't remember who gave you that idea tho...

I really like that towing cable!
Great tip for using tape to keep the tracks together. You added some of your own magic to these magictracks!

Got to give it a try with my next Dragonkit...
should come in this week!

@FD ha! Yes, thanks for your help with the base.
If you use the masking tape idea, once your 'glue' has started to set, take the tracks off the tape to avoid it glueing to the tracks. I just ran a cocktail stick from one end to the other and they came off nicely, without falling apart.
Speaking of bases, here's the street so far.

I'd like your help with this. As the panzer I is so small, I think I need something next to it to show the scale. But the only german figures I have are Afrika Corps and they're all in running poses so I don't think they'd be suitable. Bearing in mind I'm a bit skint at the mo, any ideas as to what I could scratch build to put on the base? Any help is appreciated.

So here she is with paint and decals on (minus the delicate antenna). Weathering next.

After reading Paul's thread, I thought I'd give the 'splodgy oil technique' a go.
I may have gone a teeny bit overboard though!

Has Chief finally gone too far? Tune in later to find out! Lol

Yeah oil dots, once you get some white spirit on it you will be fine, just keep wiping your brush off on some kitchen towel as you go and dont let any dry in corners as it goes white.

Cheers lads! After reading your comments I was kinda tempted to leave it with the measles look! Lol.

So this is how it turned out. Not sure if its worked as it should but I'm happy with the results so far.

So now I just need to figure out what to put next to it on the base?!

Brilliant job on the weathering chief!

As for something on the base.... you could make a telegraph pole.
Those are easy to build. With some kind of sign nailed to it, it would show the scale perfectly I think.
Another idea would be a tree stump. A shot to pieces tree that would stand next to the road.
If I come up with some more ideas, I will let you know!
As for me I'm going

for an idea for my figure stand..

A unique thing to add might be a newspaper on the ground. I have no idea what tyoe of paper to use for it, but I think it'd be a neat addition.

Other than that...great build man!!! Terrific tank and outstanding cobble street.

A little more progress.
I looked into the telegraph poles. A 10m pole at 1/35 is about 285mm so it'd look a bit daft on such a small base. So I went with the street light instead.

I added a few bits to the cobbles, and the street light is made of sprue and plasticard.

Without being arrogant, it's turned out better than I thought it would!

So now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for this one. I just hope no one turns it off before I get there, lol!

Base is gorgeous chief......

What colours and washes did you use to get the effect?
What grass and scattered debris did you use?
...and how have you fixed it?

^^ Thanks Wappy, I appreciate your comments.

The cobbles were painted with various greys, then washed with Flory Models washes. I used sand, dark dirt and grime. Once it dried, I swept it in various places with a wide brush 'til I was happy.
A spray of humbrol Matt varnish sealed this in.

I dabbed a pva/water mix in places and sprinkled tea from a tea bag on to the base. Much like you did as a kid with glitter on Christmas cards! Once it dried, I blew off the excess.

The green stuff is a mix of real dried moss/lichen and fake turf from woodland scenics. Again, applied with the pva/water mix.
Another light spray of the Matt varnish holds it all down.
