Freezing paints

Post by Filo387 »

Hi all
I have got my self a man shed over the summer it is a simple wooden shed about 3m x3m. I have made little shelves to put all my paint on. A mixture of enamels and acrylics. Will the be safe over the winter or should they be brought in he house. I am in the uk by the way.
Regards martin

I wouldnt have thought that paints would take kindly to frost, the acrylics in particular.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.

I brought my paint in from the unheated garage...cements and other liquids as well
Put them in a tool box or tote so you can bring them back and forth easier

It almost sounds like the paint was frozen at some point
Aqueous is less sensitive to this then Vallejo, AK and Ammo but freezing can cause some trouble
Personally i would strip the paint of the model and toss the affected bottle in the bin

To be honest I doubt it gets below freezing in a shed in the UK Midlands in the winter. If you think about it most folk keep non alcoholic Crimbo drinks in the garage or shed over the winter to keep them cool but in all the years I've been doing it I've never had a frozen bottle. Doncaster ain't Canada... :thumb1:

Yep, gets pretty cold in my igloo over the long winter.
I have to bring in the Huskies as well at night or they freeze to the sled....ask my friend Cohen, he knows Canadian winters

Most glues and paints have an optimum range of temperature for use and storage...not too hot and not too cold
Bringing them in over the winter is really smart so you don't have to post a "what happened to my paint" thread like one above
I don't order dental anaesthetic in the winter as had a shipment get too cold and it failed to get people numb :eeek: Maybe that is why I am careful

Doncaster isn't a million miles from me (near Hull) and I can honestly say that, yes, it does get cold enough in my shed to freeze drinks! I suppose it depends on how harsh the winter is that year. But it's still not Canada cold, lol!

I insulated the shed, that will stop frost hopefully, I also put a heater in on a frost stat and one of those moisture bins that takes calcium carbonate I think it is. Now my shizzle is never damp and the shed heats up in minutes

you could always circumvent the view about how cold it gets by accessing the weather records for your town..You will know for sure then.

However cold it will get in your shed, you can bet it was colder in the cargo hold of the plane they came in on. I'd wager you'll be fine...just let them warm up before you try to spray them. Mine have gotten pretty cold down in the basement on those external walls by the leaky single pane windows with no ill effects.

Well in Hobart we had some snow on the mountain overlooking the city last week. That all said Tassie in an island with its own weather patterns, so most mainlanders would say we don't count. :)

Good call! Coldest December here since 1910 was 2010 with an average mean of -1C compared to the average overall mean of 4.2C. Hottest we've had it is 35.5C last July. We've just had the warmest November since records began, top temperature 22.4C.

Mind you 50 miles away in the moorland town my wife is from they often get blocked in with snow in the winter, I can't remember the last time we had snow that settled for more than a couple of hours here. You wouldn't believe how much the weather varies in such a short distance in the UK, you can watch the south of the country around 150 miles away grinding to a halt with snow on the news and look out the window at a glorious sunny day. No wonder we're obsessed by the weather.

Interesting stuff weather stats.
Regards, Dave.

Hello mark,

Slightly off track, but I would have assumed that winter in the cooler climes. Would have all modelers inside in a nice warm cubby ,not set up in an isolated 3x3 amongst the glaciers........ just curious :

Digger
I got myself a 30ft metal ex military portacabin a few years ago...extended my garden to make it fit, wired it up, shelved it and got it all ready.........BUT......I have a spare room here and I got fed up tripping over my dog in the evenings on my way back into the house so I moved my models indoors and here I am ! With a 30ft container in my garden filled with coldddd beer and motorcycles !!
Cheers Mate

Thinking , I'm worried about my paints. Had every intention to insulate the shed this year, but haven't had chance. Any suggestion of the best insulation options?
