What other hobbies have you done?

Post by gazmat »

This has probably been done before, so apoligies if it has......but wondering what other hobbies have you done in life?

For me, Cycling was my biggest passion for years (racing etc), still love watching it on TV, then for a few years (8-9yrs) Photography took hold, but that became too expensive to keep up with the big boyz (still have quality kit though..Nikon through and through, Still have my 500mm F4 VR Lens :th: ), stopped that....bit of Fishing after that, and thats where Modelling has taken over, as Im 54 this year, I can see modelling taking me into retirement... :thumb2:

So what has been/ is your passion before you started Modelling....?

Bet there will be some really interesting answers.... :pop:

Crikey, how long you got? I'm nearly 60 so guess I've had a few.

The ones I don't do anymore:

Badminton
Volleyball
Gliding
Running
Play guitar in rock bands
Motorcycling

The ones I do sort of as the whim takes me

Coarse fishing
Golf
Astrophotography

The ones I do regularly:

Make models obviously
Rambling (that's walking cross country for our foreign guests, not talking s*** although I do my fair share of that)
Stamp collecting, pre decimal British
Gardening
English History, particularly Reformation onwards but will look at medieval if it's something interesting
Flying light aircraft

I read if I can get to the library and find an interesting book. I still consider myself a tabletop RPG gamer, although that's been on hiatus for years now. I am trying to restart my modeling. I watch movies (thank G*d for streaming sites) and older TV shows (currently the 1961 series The Avengers. WOOT WOOT!). Then I am taking care of my great niece and great nephew as well.

Other current hobbies:

Badminton
Squash
Learning new things
History
Museum visits
Collecting gadgets

What I did between starting modelling again and stopping 15 odd yrs ago

Airsoft
Paintballing
Gliding
Flying - unfortunately had to stop flying on medical ground but used to hold a PPL ME IR
Green Laning - Used to have a fully modded Defender 110 for off roading and green lanes. Insurance costs became stupid and diesel consumption was rather high.

Sorry to hear that, my med is suspended at the moment until I get an all clear for a heart condition, nothing serious but you know what the CAA are like, it's like talking to badgers trying to get any sense out of them. Got a night rating and IMC (or IR(R) as it is now) on singles. What twins did you fly?

I have always said if I win the lottery, I will go back to the CAA and fight them to the bitter end to get my medical cert. back and then renew my license. It's safe to say the CAA aren't my favorite people. As for what twins I flew, I did my MEP in the BE.76 Dutchess, PA34 Seneca III and the DA42 Twin Star. I have to say the Seneca was my favorite though the Dutchess was always very enjoyable to fly. Only did a check ride and a single 2 hour flight in the Twin Star, the glass cockpit was a novelty but I think I prefer and felt more at home with a cockpit full of steam gauges even if the work load is higher.

I used to love flying at night when I lived in Florida much more preferable temperatures and calmer air.

Yes night flying has a charm of it's own although I don't like straying too far in a single! I prefer steam as well, there's just too much unwanted info in glass, it's a distraction from keeping your Mk 1 eyeball out of the window where it should be. We have a DA42 at the club but can't say I'm that bothered about having a go in it, I usually fly an Arrow, fast enough for the price.

I never got to fly in an Arrow. I was due to start my CPL in an Arrow IV and was quite looking forward to it when my medical was pulled from under me. Maybe one day I will get to fly an Arrow.

Nice cruiser but heavy on the controls. I fly a Mk1 with the old Hershey bar wing and you have to keep power on right down to the flare otherwise it really drops like a stone. Doesn't like less than 80 kts on the approach. It will go slower but you're nose high and dragging it in. Cruises at 24 squared at around 135 kts for a burn of around 35 lph when you've leaned it out to 25 degrees ROP.

The MkIV with the T Tail (I think they did a IV without the T Tail as well) has a reputation for blanking off the elevator if you get low and slow.

When I was younger I played a bit of badminton and made model kits. Then I moved into Warhammer and that was my main modelling focus for years as well as mountain biking and playing hockey (field hockey) and a bit of rugby.

These days I very rarely find myself out on my bike (although its something I need to get back into), but no longer play Warhammer but got back into scale modelling. I am also an avid Airsoft player and try to get out as often as I can to play. I am also a general military history enthusiast.

You forgot drinks testing Lee!
For me the list in no particular order is: music, movies, reading, rc, wargaming, fishing, gardening, drinking, self loathing, being grumpy, electronics, the list goes on and on.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.
My motto? I'm not lazy, just energy efficient.

I've had a few hobbies over the years.

My brother is 14 years older than me and treated like more than a brother for a long time, so most of my hobbies were shared with him. We did model railroads for a bit, RC planes, PC gaming, airsoft, and probably a dozen other things.

I've done a few things on my own too. I did Viking Age re-enacting for about 2 years and we did live steel combat with blunted swords. Nothing was choreographed so it was a real fight. It was a Western Martial Arts with heavy re-enacting. I miss the re-enacting and I want to get into Middle Ages Sword Fighting with HEMA. I've also looked into WWII re-enacting and there is a German Infantry group in the North Texas area that I would like to meet one day.

Right now besides modeling I like to read, play PC games on occasion, watch movies with my wife, and play with my dog. I work in IT and am studying for Software Development and I am really interested in focusing on Robotics. I do some small project with my PCs in the house and a Raspberry Pi. We live in an apartment right now, and once we move into an actual house with a garage, I want to get into full scale robotics and building things. I think small scale combat robotics looks like a blast. And of course one hobby that take a lot of my time... is just looking at models online and seeing what I want to pick up next and add to the growing stash!

Rugby was one of my favourite pastimes, played for the Scarlets, which is Llanelli RFC, back in the 80's.
Used to breed working Labradors, black and Yellow, but still have a Labrador, named Reggie jones, but he's chocolate, and as dull as a brush.
Loved keeping fit, but due to disabilities can't do that anymore, loved cycling, miss it so much. It's the old saying, you don't know how much you miss something ,until your unable to do it.
Was in the Fire service for 25 years, until I was forced to retire on health grounds. Model making keeps the brain cells from disappearing, lol. Think I'd go mad if it wasn't for building models.
I sell my models and the money made, give to Help The Hero's charity. That's my life in a nutshell

I kinda cycle through my hobbies during a year, one is seasonal so I naturally focus more on that.

Anyway, this is what I do.

Amateur astronomy, with focus on astro photography. Mostly galaxies. I mostly do this during winter and spring due to weather and the amount of 'interesting' targets I have available.
Model railroading, I have a small N scale layout on which I slowly build things.
Beer, mostly drinking that is. Belgian beer is favourable.
Gaming, I love grand strategy games, like Europa Universalis series or Hearts of iron series. I also play some simulators like IL2 Sturmovik and Rise of flight etc.
I also have a general interest in lots of other things, like Sci fi (could be movies, tv shows, games, models, etc) and of course a general military interest.

Not had all that many hobbies but i stuck at one for years and years

Loved mountain biking when i was younger and a lot slimmer lol, lucky to live a a great place for that.
Was also big into rc cars when i was a teenager too
I modelled as a child too, and got back into for a year in 2003, but lack of room made it difficult so i gave it up

My main hobby for nearly 20 years was shooting, i started when i was 10 with airguns, and all through my teens till i leant to drive, found women booze and other things lol. Then a few years later back into it again, my gf hanna bought me a clay pigeon shooting lesson for my 28th birthday and i was hooked, so shotgun shooting (clay and rough shooting) became a big (and expensive) hobby, and i also got back into airgun shooting again.
I met my mate nige99 shortly after he left the army in about 2007 and we soon formed an airgun HFT (Hunter Field target) club in 2008, i shot competitively for over a year and at national level got a 2nd place in my class (including a couple of 1st place trophies).

I was gearing up for a 2nd year shooting nationally when i was in a car crash that broke my collar bone and screwed up my back severely. Since that day I've not been able to shoulder a rifle or shoot prone comfortably at all, after couple years recovering i tried to get back into it but my body and mind wasn't into like i had been previously so i decided that was it. Ill stick a couple pics at the bottom of the post.

I started loosing my mind after the crash as i was stuck at home for three months as the pain was so bad, and tried all sorts of different things to occupy myself.. Online gaming helped a lot, but i needed something else so tried all sorts of hobbies, but settled on Modelling again, so in october 2010 i took this back up and this is were i am now.

We hit a car that had crashed ahead of us and ended up side on in lane 2 of the M56 motorway, it was a black car with no lights on, on an unlit motorway in the dark and we ploughed into it at 70mph.

The car we were in survived the impact amazingly well and really did save our lives.
Image

After we hit the car, we came to a stop in lane two and a 7.5 ton truck behind swerved and just clipped the back of the car.
Image

Where i was sat, you can see where my seat submarined under the impact, always ALWAYS wear you seat belt, it screwed up my shoulder, but i don't think i would be alive today without it.
Image
Image

The Honda CRV we hit (nobody in it luckily) this took all the impact luckily and i was told we shunted it 20ft down the road (no idea if that true or not)
If you look you can see the passenger seat on top of the drivers seat, and the passenger seat is still attached to the cars floor.

Yikes, you were very lucky indeed Paul. Having driven down the M56 many times I know how dark it gets along there.
