What's your "white whale"?

Post by Lysus »

You know, the kit that always got away. The one that you never got but always wanted, or got but it lurks on your shelf, taunting you. Perhaps it's too complex or just scares you, or maybe you even built it but made a mess of it; you'd like to try again but now it's impossible to find.

(Kiddos afforded me no build time this weekend, so this is all I've got...humor me...)

For me it would be the old Tamiya Centurion tank in 1/25th scale. I remember, when it first came out, being mesmerized by Tamiya's promotional images, showing the armour partly cut away to reveal the interior. I loved those promotional images. I suppose I could track one of those kits down, it's just that I know I could never do it proper justice. Still, that's the one that got away from me...

Oh the ones that haunt me are Tamiya's 1/32 P-51D/K and Spitfire MkVIII. I'm waiting to save up some cash for an Airbrush, but even then I know I won't have the modeling skill to do it justice. Though have Revells F4u Corsair which I have no problem with stuffing up

Mine is currently an eduard fokker dr3 stripdown 1:72 kit in the stash, keep looking at it but just dont have the stones to actually start it.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.
My motto? I'm not lazy, just energy efficient.

Mine is Revell's 1:32 FW190-D9. I managed to loose the sprues with not only both fuselage halves but the upper wings too. Of course 10 or so years after buying it the damn thing isn't available any more and not even listed on Revell's website :(

Mine was the Amt Mack R600 truck. Finally found it on a vintage auto kit website, and it was the worst kit that I've ever built.

Mine was a heavy paper model of the Apollo Launch Umbilical Tower, complete with launch platform and Crawler for the journey to the launch pad. I built the main assemblies for the crawler, the platform and the tower itself before dissolving into tears at the thought of building all the swings arms, walkways and pipe arrays that covered the whole damn thing. I moved house in 2014 and tossed it.

Why oh why could someone not make a kit of the launch tower in plastic? I would have paid a small mortgage for a plastic LUT for my 1/144 Saturn 5 to nestle up against.

Houston we have a problem - too right you've got a f***ing problem.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

A kit I wish I had got at the time but was rather expensive. The best kit of the British comet ever produced ImageImage

I have the Trumpeter SCUD in my stash just now, and I think its sort of a white whale for me just now. I do want to build it, and know I could without much issue. But I really want to do it justice and feel that it needs to be detailed up as it just deserves it, but my scratchbuilding skills are very poor and I think this is what puts me off starting it just now. Not helpful really when I want to buy the new Smerch MLRS as well, and would need to do the same thing!

For me, one of two actually. Either my conversion of the 1/350 Nimitz to the Reagan or the 1/72 Revell B-52D to H using the AMT wing root and tail. Right now I am detailing the bomb bay.

I have a lot of kits I'm shying away from until I'm set up for and have practiced with airbrushing. I've gotten decent at brush painting but I wanna really do them properly. So more like a pod of off-white dolphins for me

I'm in a similar boat...amidst the dolphins. As much as I'd love to throw my new airbrush at ALL THE THINGS I know I should spend time learning how to use it first.

I have 1:24 Aston Marton DBS but need more practice with the airbrush.
I have been looking for a 1:48 Blackburn Buccaneer but I think I missed the boat.

It is somehow funny that I noticed today this thread , and I think that I finally bought today my 'white whale' , in terms that it was a kit that I want so bad , even it is one of the largest 1/35 scale kits ...some months ago I search for this , and search ... and couldn't find it anywhere ...but I just love this boat , it is the Italeri 1/35 Schnellboat S-100 , well today I buy one of these :-) , with figures , resin depth charges ,metal gun barrels for the deck guns and really I could do it here in ISM this year here in a GB on ISM ...I buy it because ...just because I love that kit :-) . I will do my best to build it , now , where to place it latter ...ahemm , that will be a different story :-)

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

But it's no longer a white whale. I won one on ebay last night! The price most were going for was nuts, but one popped up in Canada and that scares off a lot of the American bidders so this one will cost me just over $100 (Canadian) with the shipping. Now to see how long it takes Canada Post to move it less than 100km....

For me most of my stash, lol.
The one that got away is the 1.35 Horsa glider, very nearly got it at Telford this year but the price is killing my wallet. But it will be one I will have to get.
The Kit I have that just worries the most is the Trumpeter 1.35 Germen BR52 loco, :jd: :jd: o man what a kit but I'm so not ready for it.
But really just a simple one is airbrushing, got one but sure as hell don't know how to use it :bash: :wall:

My white whale is the BPZ 2 in 1/35 :(
I'm looking for an affordable plastic kit but I have not found one yet.
There is one from "Perfect Scale Modellbau" in resin but it costs 156€. A little bit to expensive...

I've always wanted to build the B29 Superfortress from Monogram/Revell in 1/48 but still think that I lack the skills needed to do it properly.

Mine would probably be HMS Victory. But I am too intimidated by it. Also the Tamiya 1/35 Dragon Wagon. But it is huge and I don't have a place for it.

At the moment mine is the Revell 1/48 P61 Black Widow. It sits and taunts me. I hear it laughing quietly when I'm trying to sleep.

I remember almost drooling over the Twin Mustang at the then lhs waaay back in the 70s. I even saved up to buy it, then got a model rocket instead. I still would like to try and get her and build her (this coming from an avowed NO Plane builder!).

For me I have two things in mind that I've always wanted to do.
1st. A DIO with the Wright Brothers KittyHawk. My grandmother was there. For years I searched and searched and could never find a model. Well, I was at Hobbylobby a few months ago and there it was!!! . I grabbed 4. Don't aske me why I just did.
So, that is one of dreams I can make into a reality.
2nd. I want to build a line of aircraft that range from Kittyhawk to today. Starting with all US military oriented. If I succeed, then move to British and then German. I plan on this taking the rest of my life. :bash:

My partially finished Monogram B-29 , almost 18 years ago ive worked on it but im slowly getting there , just invested in an airbrush , i need to destroy a few kits for practice first , ordered Eduard mask set today , need to order those fancy new Vallejo metallic colors and try them out on a lesser victim and then its go for launch.
