Humbrol Decalfix

Post by Cole4ord »

Hi fellow modellers,

Does anyone here have any experience of using this product.
Currently doing my first model since returning to the hobby. I have airbrushes the model with Tamiya Acrylics and was just putting the decals on before starting the weathering. Whilst the first decal was in some of the product I was putting some where the decal was going Togo and noticed that it was affecting the paint, didn't strip it but has affected it and noticed some paint on the brush too.

Has anyone else found this? Is it a poor product? Not to be used on Acrylics?

Have you coated the acrylic with a coat of Klear before applying the decals.? If not, then that is probably your problem, the paint needs to be "sealed" before applying decals.

I have used decalfix before and it's worked just fine but you should gloss coat your model first as gazmat said.

Cheers for your help guys. I wasn't aware of this. Can anyone recommend a good gloss? Is it something I airbrush on or is it a spray paint?

I've used it over tamiya with good results. I did clear coat it before had though. Im new back into doing models too. The clear i used was the dredges from a tamiya clear rattle can emptied into an airbrush

If I paint with Acrylics I would then gloss with Enamels. then use acrylics to weather. that way if I mess anything up i can clean it off down to the enamel and start again.

Sounds like a good idea.
Can anyone recommend a gloss product to me?
I have had a look and there is a lot of different products on offer. Don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Alclad or find a bottle of Klear floor cleaner by Johnsons, Asda used to sell it for about £4...use it neat, sprayed on at around 20psi.

Klear is the "go to" when it comes to sealing your work. And before putting on your decals and hence your decal solutions you should always seal your work to protect it. Klear is often used because it does almost as good a job as any gloss varnish and it's WAY CHEAPER! That's the reason why so many modelers use it for this purpose. However, Klear should probably NOT be your final finish on your model. If you are doing a camouflage you should use a flat coat. If you are going for a metal finish, you should go with a gloss other than Klear. Other readers may want to comment on this.
