Can anybody help me,my Iwata Neo gun not working.

Post by Bignev »

Hi guys, I am hoping someone can help me out here as I am now going out of my mind trying to figure why its stopped spraying.
I have cleaned the hell out of it, had it to pieces and left nozzles to soak in windex soaking over night nothing always the same result, all I am getting out of the gun is water, cleaning fluid, as soon as i try with the paint it just clogs up and not a drop leaves the gun at all,I can even backflush the gun and theres no problem there so can it be just the nozzle.I clean the nozzle but no differance all ways the same result.
I have been on over a week now trying to fix it but nothing, purchased a cleaning kit so I can get into all those nasty little places, even got some windex as I heard it was the best thing for unclogging things with but still nothing. is it something other than a blockage any guidance would be fantastic,I really need to get this fixed because my cheap chinese gun has now done the same and I can no longer do anything until I sort it out,I cant understand it because I am very careful when cleaning and I always leave a drop of cleaner in the gun when finished after cleaning.
Many thanks, Nev

I've had this happen to my NEO three times - all three times it happened after using Vallejo paints.

One easy fix is to by a new needle and nozzle (about $25 at Hobby Lobby) - but the last time this happened I did something different - I had some rubbing alcohol so I soaked all the parts in that for twenty minutes or so - then really cleaned the parts up and ran the airbrush using the rubbing alcohol for a minute or so and it worked better than ever. (I am sure people will advise against the rubbing alcohol though, but I was in the middle of a project, and my airbrush is working great). Another thing is running the air pressure too high on the Neo, as it tends to not spray paint

or try cleaning with cellulose thinners, that'll clean and break down anything.

If using Vallejo Model Color paints you really have to thin them down more than you do other paints. Once you get the ratio right they usually work well (except black always seems to be a problem). It does sound like you may have a damaged/cracked/bent needle since your problem has been persistent. Also, I have read that you should NOT soak the airbrush (or any part that has rubber in it) overnight. 20-30 minutes should be enough. Soaking longer can cause the rubber parts to swell considerably and cause problems with paint flow. I did that once and it caused me a lot of grief. I allowed my brush to dry 24 hours and it worked fine afterwards.

Let us know how you do!

Sounds like the paint rather than the brush to me. If its vallejo colour your using that would explain a lot. I have a Neo and I cant get vallejo colour to spray nicely no matter what I try. As Joe said, the Black vallejo clogs the tip in seconds, and the other colours dont go down so well either. Since switching to Tamiya paint, thinned 50/50 with their own thinners, the Neo has been an absolute pleasure to use! Never blocks and sprays beautifully with great control, a good pattern and smooth as a baby's bum. The Vallejo colour was always grainy and rough textured. To be fair to the vallejo though, the colour range brushes very nicely, and wasnt made for an airbrush. I cant comment on vallejo Air range.

If its not the paint. Have a look if the nozzle is centred smack bang in the centre of the screw cap. I saw on youtube some early reviews where the nozzle wasn't centre so the air didn't pass equally around it. Its hard to explain what I mean, but if you take the little needle protector cone off your brush so just the main cap is hiding your nozzle, you should just see the tip of the nozzle ever so slightly protruding from the main domed cap. The nozzle should be absolutely dead centre in the hole. You may need a magnifying glass to see. If its not then the spray pattern will be bad and it will block easy. As far as I know there is no fix if its bad, if the nozzles not bent, then its a manufacturing issue.

If that's ok, you could try polishing your needle. The Ultimate polishing stick is good for that! look up how to polish the needle on you tube.

I am going to join in this thread if I may. I decided to purchase a neo after find the cheapie airbrushes I had bought were pretty poor. However first go using Vallejo primer it sprayed ok for awhile then started to splutter the stopped spraying entirely. I stripped it cleaned it with ultimate cleaner. Had to wind the compressor up to max in the end to blow it clear. Not been "brave" enough to try again but I'm assuming even though you're. Told it doesn't need it I need to thin the paint. Or maybe try a little retarder. Anyone any input??

I find primer does need a higher pressure to spray well, i generally go about 30 indicated, if you remove the nozzle and hold it up to the light to look through it you will be able to see any built up crud, i use a small sewing needle to get rid of any stubborn clods but be careful not to scratch the inside of the nozzle.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.

Hi all, i have finally getting back to my models but i am affraid i am no further forward, i have gone and purchesed a EVOLUTION SILVERLINE Airbrush and hey presto i am having the same problem with this and that is straight out of the box. Can it be the pump at fault here as i have checked even replaced all bits that i can but still no go, everything is just blocking up no matter what i do, i have just varnished my last project a WW2 U Boat and it was just blocking up all the time took me 50 minutes just to varnish it,and i had even thined down the varnish..Like some advice on the best pump to get for modeling as i only got a cheapy really to start off with and its too late for me to stop now i have all sorts waiting to put together, LOL

I have had a little success found if I thinned the paint a little it helped also the last run I used a little flow improver which appeared might be washing up liquid??

Well i dont believe it but i have got my guns sorted, I cant beleive it but i saw a post on here and followed it and hey presto they are now working again. I had to soak them in cellulose thinners First, the then flushed them with Medical spirit and repeated a few times and hey presto they are finally clear again, i cannot beleive that it has just been a blockage all of this time i am truely lost for words i had tryed everything with them and cleaned them time after time after time but who cares now, not me i am just happy i am back on the job as it were.
If anyone is having problems like this please dont underestimate how these things might block up the stuff must go like granite.
I am busy doing my favorite spy plane of all time now its the, Revell SR 71/ Blackbird, 1/72 scale its looking great a nice big model truely having a great time.
