Model Builders Block?

Post by gosselin2112 »

So. . . we've heard that writers occasionally suffer from writers block. All this week I have stared at my workbench and just couldn't get myself in the mood to build :( What's the big deal? Am I doing too much? Burn out?: If anyone has similar situations or good anecdotes, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Russell.

It's happening to me at the moment but I call it Track link syndrome, it's so boring and frustrating to glue all these track links together that I lose interest and will eventualy go do something else.

I got that with my paper modeling. Took about a year off and now doing a small model of the USS Enterprise but I think any hobby is going to have off days. You're not alone Russ. With Plastic I have found that it is all so new the excitement is still there but when I don't feel like building I end up shopping and looking at models and stuff to get.

You'll be fine. Why not do a model that you absolutely would love to start and see if that helps get you going. Sorry! I'm an electronics engineer not a psychologist so you can take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Been there.
Thats why I now have a stash off eggplanes and other random lil kits that i call my 'slumpbusters' for when you polish through ya clearcoat, snap an antenna, find a cat hair in ya paintwork, find a piece you missed after the glue has set etc etc :-)
Stand aside caffine, this is a job for alcohol.

I get that sometimes. When I do I go make a video, which usually gives me back my enthusiasm. mainly because when I've reviewed it and it's a good'un I want to go build it...lol

I've been there. Many times in fact. It usually happens when I've finished one project and I can't decide what to start next.
I open my stash closet and nothing inspires me. I never have more than one project on the go at any one time so this can happen a lot (not enough work space or concentration).
Most of the time I'll go and watch a film in the genre that I want to work in and that will kick things loose, or I'll flip through my reference library for something to do.
Half the time I'll find something that I want to do, but I don't have the kit in my stash.
Then it turns into a quest of find the kit on the net (I wish that I could afford to buy local, but this is Canada) and all the aftermarket that I'll need if I don't already have it.
Then it's waiting for the postman.
That all adds to the anticipation and enthusiasm for the build.

I find varying what I'm building makes a huge difference going from one genre to another.

Definitely! The first time I hit a wall I bought and built a tank which was the first time for me as I'd only ever built planes before. The second time I realised that it was because I didn't enjoy painting people which is odd as when I was a teenager I switched from Airfix and Matchbox to Games Workshop and painted nothing but people and loved it!

For me it's the intimidation of trying to do a great job. When looking at all the pics and vids on here I can get intimidated. But then I remind myself, I'm in this MY pleasure. I will ultimately do the best job I can.

As for slump... Usually watching a movie in the genre or reading a book in said genre will inspire me. Fortunately I have a whole list of things I want to do piled up because of the long hiatus I was on. So, off to building....

I think that this is something which effects us all whether we care to admit it or not, as Paul says a change of genre is a good bet to getting you sorted, My own therapy is simple sit down with a cup of coffee and watch a good film, not the drivel SWMBO watches but a good film of whatever genre appeals to you at that time, if it doesn't get you going again at least it may give you an idea for a future build. Remember that scene when Pierce Brosnan takes a T-90 for a test drive over the bridge and along the river, or talking about bridges how about the scene in "A Bridge too far" when the German officer wants to talk about surrender and the British officer says "I can't accept your surrender at the moment , I am a little bit busy"

It may not work for everyone but I find it helps me, I hope it does you as well.

I was just thinking about that movie today. I need to watch it again as I already have a dio in mind. I just need to watch it to get a better idea if I remember it correctly. GMTA mate!

Dang so many options so little money and time.... :bash: But there is always retirement.. Buwhahahahahahahhaha!

I know right!!! Still can't get myself to finish my Tamiya 1/48 Hezter, and I'm at the track link stage. I agree soooooo boring to sit there and put them little buggers together.
