Hello from the U.S.

Post by newmodeler »

Hello! New modeler here. Just finished my first kit(Bandai X-Wing). Still have alot to learn and master. Speaking of which? Besides trial and error and Youtube videos, how does one learn the hobby? I haven't been able to find any classes or anything like that near me. I would like to be able to know even basic things like do's and don'ts, tools, etc. I tried putting on water decals and failed utterly. Things like that would be useful to know.

Hi NM, welcome to ISM! You could do worse than picking your way through a few of these. http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewforum.php?f=193 But there's nothing like actually doing it. This is a great place to pick up tips and learn new stuff, like everything else in life, the more you do it the better you get!
Regards, Dave.

Hi ya NM! Unless you can find a local modelers group, not really any other options than watching the wonderful vids ISM put together.
I would recommend though you buy cheaper models to practice and hone your skills on. For airbrushing I found for myself at least is getting scraps of cardboard and practicing my airbrushing skills.

From there you can also practice with weathering on the cardboard as well.

But overall, as Avgas said, the more you do the better you will get. One thing I learned is JUST HAVE FUN doing it. :D Don't stress out.
