Airfix 1/24 supermarine spitfire mk Vb

Post by gaz45 »

There is a review of this kit in the review section

Time to make a start on this beast
I've built up the engine and the pilot seat

I've primed the engine with badger grey primer which is really nice to use and base coated it with vallejo metal color Dark Aluminium never used this before and it lays down great and the detail really pops

That's all for now i'm looking forward to working on this build
Thanks for taking a look

Always wondered about this kit. Part of me wants a big Spit, but other parts of me wonder if I want to fight with an older kit such as this.

Interested to follow this.

ive got this one too, looking forward to your updates and good luck. Most reviews of this kit slate it to death but as always i think its just what you can make of it that counts. anyway who doesnt want a huge spitfire :cheers2:

This is true i've only been back in modelling about 18 months now so this will be a challenge for me i have seen a review of thos kit on chrisandalex youtube channel so i know what i'm getting into (a good review btw). I am also using this to try a few technics from the AK F.A.Q book so just experimenting with this build

i agree with you to use it as a platform for experimentation and practice of core modelling skills, cause if you can do it big then you can do it small, should just be a refining of the large version right?? Ill have to watch that review, must have missed it, cant remember lol.

Saw your review a few days ago mate. Looking forward to seeing you tackle this (I may have included this kit in a recent letter to Father Christmas).

Good luck.

Right here we go the engine got an oil wash and the interior parts painted and weathered including the pilot

Time to see how they fit together there was a lot of cleanup to be done on the fuselage halves which will need some filling in parts especially where the tail wheel is
and the rudder is moveable but a little tricky to install when gluing the fuselage halves together

Next up the lower wing section with the guns installed and primed and painted also installed the front landing gear struts

Just a small update The top wing sections Here i needed to cut a section out to acommodate the ammunition boxes and drill some holes. with the wing sections primed and painted it was time to put these together with the lower section.
Not a very good fit it will need some filler

Thats all for now

Next update as i said before the wings were not a very good fit and needed a lot of filler

Image

Image

When the filler was dry and sanded these 2 parts needed to be cut to fit the cut outs i had made on the top wing sections

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Next I built the exhausts primed them in black and painted them in Humbrol antique bronze

Image

Image

Image

The intake and parts for the under side

Image

Image

Image

And lastly for now the rear wings were assembled and fitted in place with minor filling on the roots

That's all for now thanks for taking a look

I have attached the main wings to the fuselage and boy what a terrible fit lots of filling needed here

Inbetween filling the wing/fuselage i made up the front wheels

The front cowling was a terrible fit so i fixed them on place perminatly as with the removable panels on the underside

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time to sort the props and the nose

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The clear parts masked and fitted and here there was another problem the center piece does not fit right there are gaps on the front and the rear so i will paint this seperatly and fit this in the open position

Image

That's all for now just some finale filling and sanding then i'll be able to get some paint on this

Right all built filled and sanded to the best i can do with this kit.
Primed in badger black primer

Now for the paint scheme the callouts are for humbrol Ocean grey, Medium sea grey and Dark green, But as i have some Akah paints that are different for this version I decided to go with them.
So for the underside i have used Akah BS:210 Sky type 'S'and for the camo i'm using Akah BS:641 Dark green and Akah BS:450 Dark Earth.

The underside

Now for the camo firstly after some considerable masking i layed down the Dark green

That's all for now thanks for looking

Are you sure you are making a 1:24 Spitfire Mk. Vb? This because I'm pretty sure that the Vb didn't have tracked wheels   :cheers2:
Damm the glue is getting to me

This was the first model I did when I got back into the hobby snd before I had an air brush. Let's just say yours is much, much better than my attempt, well done.
