1/48 Zvezda Su-2

Post by wally »

Hello Folks

This my second entry to the GB. This time something from WWII period. Sukhoi Su-2 from Zvezda Company.
For this build I will be using some PE parts for the cockpit and canopy masks, both from Eduard.
Here is a box art:

And the plastic parts:

The build should be started soon so stay tuned.

Hello Folks

I start working on my Su-2 build. First I remove some parts from the sprue's especially the bombs and bomb-bay interior. Then I was start painting all interior part using Tamiya XF-25 Light Sea Grey (I think this close enough match for Russian interior color), but before that I put some shading lines using Flat Black. Bombs were painted according to the instruction XF-66 German Grey. Then I followed with attaching all interior PE parts for side consoles and main instrument panel. I also paint the engine parts using various metalic colors like steel, exhaust and burt iron colors.
Progress so far you can see on following pictures:

Image
Image
That's it for now. Right now I'm working on weathering the cockpit so next post should be very soon.
Cheers

Hello Folks

I'm glad you like it. Quick update on my build. The cockpit is basically finished. I weather it using enamel dark wash and put all PE parts in the side and cockpit tub.
Image
Image

I'm also start working on engine and the cowling. I put all cowling part together and I realize that the shape of the cowling is rather odd.
I think I will replace this with some resin one from Vector. With resin cast cowling I will also receive new resin engine that looks much better the kit one.
Image
That's it for now now. I will be working on closing fuselage and wings together and in the mean time I will be waiting for after market parts to arrive.
Cheers

Hello Folks

Finally the resin nacelle and engine arrive so I can start working on it. First I cut all resin parts from casting blocks. For the engine cowling I need to take aft part of the kit nacelle and glue to the fuselage first.
Image
Image

Then I assembled the engine. You can see on the pictures below the comparison to the kit engine.
Image
And after painting steel color and some oil washes I hand paint the gear box using Grey color. The push rods were made from 0.3mm copper wire and painted black. After all this efforts the completed engine looks like this.
Image
I think you agree that resin replacement looks far more better detailed the the kit one.
In terms of nacelle itself I painted it using interior Light Sea grey color follow by satin coat and the I add some weathering to the inside by brushing enamel dark wash and after its dry a little bit remove excess, leaving streaks and grime inside the cowlling.
Image

That's it for now. Next update after installation resin upgraded parts to the kit.
Stay tuned.
Cheers

Hello Folks

The next build update. This time after priming and pre shading technique. As always Badger Primer goes very nicely. Pre shading was done using Tamiya NATO Black color. Today after the work I will start painting the underside using AMT-7 Blue.

Next update after the paiting

Hello Folks

Next update on my build. During the weekend I have some time to spent on my Su-2. What I've done you can see on the photos below. Basically I start painting entire aircraft. First was the underside AMT-7 blue color made by mix of Tamiya paints. The bleaching was done adding couple drops of off white color to the basic one.

Image

Follow by masking the underside demarcation line and start first top camo color. This time I used Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green. Bleaching was done adding some buff to the mix. It's hardly visible on the photos but thrust me it's there.

Image

That's it for now during the week there is a plan to complete painting and start putting decals on it.

Hello Folks Again

The painting stage on my Su-2 is complete. Top camo pattern was spray free hand using XF-61 Dark Green and XF-86 Tire Black. Black color was bleached using dark grey color from Tamiya. After that I varnished entire model using Alclad Aqua Gloss to prepare for decals and weathering.

Image
Image

Thats it for now. Next stage is decals not many of them so it should be very quick job. :)

Hello Folks

Almost done this is final post before the final reveal in the gallery. Decals on, weathering on using Grime Clay Wash. Then oil wash to recreate oil stains and some post shading in couple areas. Chipping done using silver pencil, after that hole model was sealed using Flat Varnish. Right now I'm working on the glass so I definitely complete work on time.
