Sanding Tamiya Plastic

Post by Joe »

Gentlemen!

I am working on my first Tamiya model ever. I was really looking forward to it but find myself a little disappointed. For one thing: I have been endlessly sanding away at seam lines. I start with the most coarse padded sanding stick I have and work my way down to the polish/buffing sticks. I check my seam line and I find it's still the same. After numerous iterations of this process I still find no change. I check the seam line with my thumb nail and can still feel that step. I have tried over and over with no change. Now I can see that I am changing the shape of the fuselage (not good!) but not the seam line!

I have never had this problem on other planes. Is it the plastic that Tamiya uses?

Thanks in advance for your expert advise!

If you are talking about the mold seams, start with a hobby knife and scrap the seam. Drag the blade "backwards" (the blade angled reversed away from the direction of travel). Use light pressure and make sure the blade is only in contact with the seam. Stop while a little of the seam is left or you'll create a flat spot, then move on to sanders.
If you are talking about a glued seam, the glue may be the issue.

I forgot to mention that the fuselage is glued together with Tamiya extra thin cement.

Tet sands fine, a pic would help, could your sanders be past their best or need a clean out?
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.

Hey Paul- I would like to insert pics here however, I haven't figured out how to do that yet. When I click on the image button (Img) all I get is img][/img] in this text line. I'm not able to pick the pathway to the image on my computer. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Can you help me out with dropping an image in the text?
