Trade/convention forum?

Post by Lysus »

Maybe one exists here already, but I was curious if any thought was ever given to a forum slot for members to keep each other abreast of upcoming trade shows, conventions, and swap meets in their areas? Maybe the forum curator can keep a sticky with a master list of posts/dates etc.

I mean, sure, Google works, but after noticing today that I missed a show by one weekend (they're generally terrible about promotion and so go unnoticed in my corner of the world) I thought it might be neat for members to to help each other notice events in their area.

Thoughts?

I think that the idea is good but i am a thinking about how would you put it together
we have a lot of members on here and from all over the world
it could turn into a big mess very fast if you don't have a plan to put it together
my suggestion would be that a single member puts the topic up on the forum
Other members can send him or her a pm with the shows that they know off
If everyone just posts away it still would be a hell of a search trying to find somwthing in your country or even area

I think that the best way would be to put it together like this

UK
Name of show / date / place
Name of show / date / place
etc. etc. etc.

US
the same way as above

And then build it up like this
but that is just my idea of doing it
On the bench
GB builds
1/35 Trumpeter M1132 ESV

Personal builds
1/35 Hobby Boss M1070 tractor with M1000 semi trailer and Meng M1A2 TUSK II Abrams
1/35 Takom V2 rocket with the Meillerwagen and SS100 tractor

I agree with the points raised by Mark. Most regional IPMS websites offer such a listing already.

Guys, just pointing out that there plenty of forum members who would have no idea what IPMS is or that it even exists.

I didn't know until I caught up with a friend who does model reviews and I reckon a big chunk of members here wouldn't know either.

I'd say only die hard or long term guys in the hobby would know.

Cheers

True enough Homer. And to be honest, they're not really missing much, are they?

Yes, my thinking was members could post info in a topic and the forum curator would maintain a sticky with a master list.

Heh, of course not. I think it's non-essential enough that a regular user volunteer could moderate assuming they don't mind popping on once a week and updating the sticky with new information/clear out old information. Strictly community run.

I didn't. Any idea how comprehensive it is? I only have a minute to peek at it right now.

I think that we coupd ask a forum member to run it
but i don't think the topic should be filled with replies of guys pointing out a show
that way you get a massive list that only looks messy and is hard to follow
besides that you can get doubles (multiple people pointing out 1 show) and that onpy takes up more time
if it is a locked topic with just the list it will be much easier to find a show
if you have a show in mind that you want to add you can pm the person who monitors it
But Paul and Lee have enough going on with their buisnesses and the forum
i don't know if they can grant someone the possibility of being the only one that can modify the topic like you see with the Roques gallery that Lee is running
but it could be a regilular member to run it if that would help the admins
i wouldn't mind to put up such a thing though

I think we're thinking along the same lines. I'm not sure what the permission structure is like for this board, but I've seen boards that allow for moderator permission by forum section before. If this one has that kind of structure, then it would be a snap, otherwise Paul and Lee would have to select a chap they'd trust...tricky.

The members could post a new topic with the name, date, and location in the title and any contact info in the body, then the mod (say once a week) would add this info to the sticky. If there's members near that location they could chat in the topic to arrange meet ups or whatever. Multiples could be deleted. Once the date has come and gone, the topic could be deleted (to save data storage fees--it's not a forum that needs a long memory).

Again, that would be dependent upon the permission structure...and the reliability of the volunteer

Would it not be easier to set up some sort of calendar, that could be linked to the forum
