Old Kits

Post by digger303 »

I thought I would toss an idea into the ring as to future group builds.
Kit builds from say the 70's 80's 90's what ever you get the idea. Won't appeal to every one , but those master builders may get a kick out of it and the great herd of the unwashed ( ME) will learn a lot.

I agree. My dad built brass HO scale engines, but every now and then he'd do a car. I've had this kicking around in my closet since his passing 11 years ago:

Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312B "Big Scale"

Huh, inside the manual I found a first draft of his model railroad layout. Is it dusty in here? Must be dusty, let me wipe my eyes a little.

Image

The manual was produced with english sidebars and instructions. This looks to be above my skill level for now. But damn if it isn't amazing to think about building...

The back of the manual.

Odds and ends. Looks like he had started to build out the shell.

I have no idea when this kit was produced, but it looks old to me.

Edit to add: If this layout plan is a preliminary sketch, that means he had to have bought this kit prior to 1979. Also, there's a tasteless Zanardi joke to be made about the driver, but I won't...

That is a very special kit for you and will be a cool build to complete your dad's work.
I remember that feeling I think you are hinting at above when I went through some tools my dad left me and found some notes in his toolbox
It is empty and heart wrenching, but still close to someone and feeling their presence

We did something similar over on YouTube last year. Some people seemed to enjoy it and others not so much. I liked it.

I can certainly understand the sentiment if an old kit has a special meaning for someone but beyond that I'm not so keen. Sometimes these older kits require a strong streak of masochism in order to be willing to take them on and I just don't have one.

Unless you're a red hot scratch builder (which I'm not), some older kits really are a bridge too far. Especially when there are a lot of reasonably priced new or newer tooled kits out there.

If it floats your boat then go for it, knock yourself out. Watching you guys turn a sow's ear into a silk purse is great, but participation wise, its not for me. As much as I love rugby (Go England), I have no interest in being a second row with my head jammed up a prop's backside all afternoon - if you get my drift!!
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Depends if you build it out of the box or go nuts. An out of the box old build could still be quite enjoyable.

I hear what you're saying, and I too am not a scratch build wizard. Also, sow's ear...

This would be the best way to approach it I think, unless it were broken into a "master class" and "amateur class" arrangement, with one GB set up for plebs like me to bash our heads against brick walls for 6 months or something. I mean, how hard could it be?

I like this idea! Call it the Throwback GB. Out of box. I remember building some kits when I was little with my dad and brother. They were awful of corse but it was fun.
