Soviet Afghan War T-62A

Sometimes called Russia's Vietnam, the Soviet Afghan War lasted over 9 years. (1979-1989). Insurgent groups who received aid from several Western countries and several Muslim countries, fought against the Soviet Army and allied Afghan forces.

I've decided to build a T-62, many of which took part in the war in Afghanistan, and some still remain in use by the Afghanistan Army.

I'll be building Tamiya's T-62A, which many reference as being a T-62 mod. 1972.

Not a whole heck of a lot of progress yet. Got the running gear put together. Still need to add some detail to the drive sprockets, mainly bolts around the gear.


Rear coming together. Need to check some pictures on how it looked without any fuel drums.


Tamiya was nice and included a piece of mesh for the radiator grills.


I have a feeling this tank got pretty picked over before the picture was taken.

Ran a few fuel lines from the fuel tanks to the engine bay and added a fender support that was missing. Going to scratch build some fuel tank clamps as those are missing as well.






Next Ill be working on the rear of the hull getting the fuel drum mounts made up.

Got the turret 90% finished. It went together easy enough. I added a piece of brass wire for the antenna.
Im also scratch building the front headlight basket as the kit piece looked way out of scale.
Hopefully I can get this finished this weekend.

Got the primer done on most of the kit. Still a few parts to add to the upper hull before it gets painted.
Hope to get this thing finished this weekend. Unless the wife has other plans lol.

Just about finished. Got the paint done and started weathering.

Went a bit oveboard on chipping but it's supposed to be a recently abandoned tank. Then sprayed the Ultimate Sand wash over the whole model. Instead of using water to remove the wash I used a small brush to scrub and brush away the wash. Didn't want it completely removed from the flat areas. It makes for a good effect I think.

Oh, I did end up replacing the kits headlight wire cage on the front of the tank. Bent up some wire and super glued together.

Thanks guys! Got her pretty much finished up. I have a few touch ups to do on the sand wash and tracks.

Pretty much calling this build done. Can't think of anything to add to the model weathering wise.
I added a few spots of gloss to oil/fuel leaks after spraying the whole kit with a matt coat.

Looking at the pictures I realize I forgot to add the unditching log at the rear.

Never tried a tank, but I had always thought that when I did the T-62 would be the one I'd did.
