Hobby Boss SAAB J29F Tunnan

Post by JonMW »

I had really mixed feelings about this kit. On one hand it's nice that a big company is making a new tooling of a Swedish plane, however I just wished that they would spend 5 minutes on trying to get some of the major details correct, like the scale. I wanted to build it as much as I could out of the box, but I had to replace the decals as the ones in the kit are only good for recycling. They work well and are pretty good quality, but the markings are just so far off I can't understand how they managed to do it.

Just to compare the Hobby Boss (top) and Pilot Replicas (bottom, correct), there is not a single thing that is correct with them. Size, color, shape are all wrong. Funny thing (or maybe not) is that the soon to be released Hobby Boss SAAB J32B Lansen has equally wrong markings but in completely different ways, how do they do it?

Any way, the kit is really nice with good fit and decent details. I used some decals from my spares to make a plane that might have existed. Used a few different Vallejo Metal color for the fuselage.

That's a beautiful Tunnan! Really nice job with the metal finish. Weathering looks really realistic. I'll have to get this kit too but with aftermarket decals for sure!

It's a shame about those roundels. It would be nice to build a kit oob but what can you do if they're that much off! It's really common with finnish roundels too: the blue colour is usually completely wrong. It can't be that hard.

Looks really good. What did you think of the Vallejo metal colors? I've got some on order and I just wondered. The finish on the kit looks really nice.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks guys!

Well if you believe Hobby Boss it's 1/48. But if you believe a caliper or a ruler or any other tool used for measuring length, it's 1/52. So it goes pretty well with this one which is in 1/51 scale :wtf:

Some of them are really nice like the aluminium and gun metal, then there are some that have a bit too big metal flakes like copper. Those don't look as good and I found it really hard to spray with a 0.2 mm needle. But it's really nice to have good metal colors that don't smell too bad.
