EVEN SIMPLER set up using an iPhone.

a lot of people wanted something even simpler.

So for this "how to" I'll use nothing but my iPhone 5!

Here's what I managed to get.





It was a nice day and I needed to seal some decals with a layer of Klear, so I decided to do it in the garden.

To get nice even lighting with no shadows, I waited till after lunch when there was a nice big shadow behind my house. I placed the model completely in this shadow on top of 4 pieces of A4 white paper.



A big sheet of white card would have let me make a curved background, so I could shoot from lower down with out getting my lawnmower in the background.

I used the basic iPhone camera software, but the later versions let you control the exposure point by tapping the screen where you want the phone to take the reading. I choose an area of dark camouflage so that the shadows would have some details but the white background would get over exposed.

It's not too bad but the phones auto white balance has messed up the colours so the image needs to be edited.

I boosted the whites to clean them up even more but that made the dark areas a bit wishy so I darkened down the shadows to compensate. I then boosted the contrast and the clarity and sharpening. I then changed the colour temperature and adjusted the hue to get rid of the blue in the shadows and make the paint colours more life like. And because the edge of A4 paper was in line with the splinter came pattern I cloned it out ( cos it looked strange).

BUT! I did all of this on my phone using FREE photo editing software! I used Photoshop lite, as I'm used to photoshop. But I expect any software package could do it with a little practice.

The only real problem with using a phone instead of a camera, is the fixed wide angle lens. This will let you focus incredibly close but it will also distort the image. I'll try and do another post when the kit is finished that explains this in more detail.

it depends a great deal what the viewer is seeing it on as well. At the moment I'm having a soak in the bath balancing my iPad mini on my stomach (now there's a disturbing image!) but if I look at your pics on my laptop they will look completely different.

I use my iPhone for virtually everything these days, it's just so quick and convenient. I have a quality camera, various lenses for it etc and it just sits gathering dust. But then my photography is just a record of stuff, I don't try and be arty with it.

Same here Dave I only use iPad or iPhone, I've just started using the crop feature (in edit) to tidy up and get a closer image.

I used all sorts of different settings, they were certainly effective and I admit was probably over done. The back ground was just a couple of A4 sheets of paper and a couple of kit boxes (white bottoms) for reflecting light. I knicked the idea from a lad called Harry Houdini on YouTube, I can't find the link at he moment.

I use a couple of sheets of white as well, good idea about the box tops, I'll try that. I like the exposure control in edit on the iphone, brings out dark areas quite well.

It's difficult to see the real build when you go all arty farty, not a bad thing with some of my stuff tho.
