ICM 1/48th Dornier Do17Z

Post by pmarshall »

Started last week, but only started taking photos today. This is the new ICM Dornier Do17Z

Image

Work starts with the cockpit unsurprisingly, starting with the port side. I did manage to lose the left half of the instrument panel, so I had to scratch build a replacement using my punch and die set.

Image

Image

then work onto the starboard side - at the moment i've just put the parts in place, need a coat of RLM02 over the top

Image

Image

Impressed with the fit and detail so far - very nice.

Today's work - Completed the starboard side

Image

Closed up the fuselage - a little Mr Surfacer 1200 required but nothing major

Image

Image

Then slotted the gunner / radio operator's seat into place

Image

Image

Image

Glazing will commence next

Today's work - started by masking one of the greenhouse panels with Parafilm

Image

Then assembled the wing and tail and joined them to the fuselage - needed a little filler to blend in, as the Do17 is a very awkward shape - lots of curves, but nothing major

Image

Image

Finally started building up the gear bays and nacelles

Today's work - fighting with Nacelles and engines

first attached the nacelles - I think that next time i'd vary from the instructions, as they were a bit of a pain to fit together. Required some CA and talc and some Mr Surfacer but did eventually wrestle into shape

Image

Image

Then next up was building up the Bramo radials

Next stage - first fitting the engines

Image

Then the lower cowling and cowling ring and the main support

Image

Then the rest of the cowling and the air intake and oil cooler. Really like how the cowling has been engineered

Image

Then on with the glazing - first the underside cupola

Image

The main canopy

Image

Finally the nose glazing

Image

Should get some primer on tomorrow once all the glazing has dried

Masked off the wheel wells

Image

Then sprayed RLM02 over the canopy frames

Image

Sprayed a coat of Ultimate Primer @25psi - went on lovely

Image

preshaded with German Grey

Image

On with the RLM65

Image

Then the RLM70

Image

Finally the RLM71

Image

Sprayed the splinter without masking as i'm going to be doing a winter distemper over the top so it doesn't need to be masked.

Quick blast today - first some heavily thinned XF-2 White with a drop of buff sprayed randomly over the top to start the distemper

Image

Then some Ammo Washable white over the top, then rubbed back with a wet cloth

Image

then finally for the distemper some pure XF-2 white in bits

Image

The photo's bleach out the subtle differences a bit, but i'm happy with it.

Next the Yellow theatre bands

Image

Finally for the day a coat of Alclad Aqua Klear over the top

Today's work - first up Decals

Image

Image

Then on with some Mig Neutral Wash, while that was drying started painting the spinners / props. However I have managed to lose one of the spinners off the sprue. So out with the Vacuformer

Image

Image

Which once trimmed, and filled with some car filler ends up fairly similar

Image

Then sprayed the spinner sections and the props

Image

Wiped back the oil wash

Image

Image

Then started adding dirt / staining by spraying heavily thinned Buff and black - gradually adding more black

Image

Image

That's it for today - tomorrow start with some oil streaking
