Boba Fett 1/16 Vinyl by Elfin

Post by WebbyNZ »

I knew I had a couple of figures in the stash but during the cleanout last weekend i found/remembered the Elfin Star wars figures I got a long time ago.
So my first entry (optimistic that ill at least be able to start a 2nd) is Elfin's 16th scale Boba Fett

The box is still in the cupboard but this is the kit

Excellent choice for a Boba Fett build.... my only worry would be to check his fit and for any distortion during storage etc....
I have read people fill them with expanding foam or plaster to help them retain their shape.
The reason I mention this is because on a sci-fi site I am a member on a forum user had a nightmare of a job with a vinyl kit he had acquired.. :wall:

Here read the posts and see what I mean... What would you guys of done?
http://www.scifimodels.org.uk/index.php ... 6&id=14851

I think Ethiopian Fett is so not the way to go :eeek:

Good luck dude. Happy modelling.. :th:

The 1/4 scale BF figure was always a "troubled" figure! Right out of the box!
The original sculpture was off! But remember! Vinyl figures were a new genre
And in the early 1990's. They were the only game in town !

An affordable medium back in the days but not always easy to work with!

Good luck guys!

I prefer the 1/6th one. Better proportions!

Although I never finished it! :(

In that case never watch the Masters Of The Universe skits :-)

Unfortunatley their Boba is mouled to look like Temuera Morrison who actually played Jango Fett.

Temuera is a fellow kiwi who is probaly best known now as the source genetic material of all the clone troopers, but at home he will always be Jake The Muss from the film once were warriors **contains violence and bad language**

and Doctor Hone Ropata which sparked possibly the most famous line in NZ television.

But now, back to the model.

Right so out of the box we have

The helmet, torso and a couple of pouches
Image
Legs and what ill call a utility belt :-)
Image
Arms and hands
Image
Rocket pack and 'cape'
Image
Small detial parts for the kneepads and the metal weapons etc.
Image

I thought I would work from the bottom up so started with the feet and to get them to fit correctly I had to take a small amount off the pegs.
Image
And he is up, will need some weight to stop him falling over once all the metal is on.
Image
There are a few of these inperfections in the kit where air bubbles got into the mould but should be easily hidden/fixed
Image
Regular scissors and this nail drill made the trimming quick and easy, parts finished with sanding sticks for a smooth edge.
Image
Just cause I can :-) Will stand about 1 foot high when complete. (part of the waist does need to be removed still.
Image
Hand, utility belt pockets and cape tidied up
Image
Helmet on, just need to tidy up the collar part
Image
I found these glass beads on special at the local craft store, they are reasonably heavy and should go down the legs well.
Image
First job was to give them something to stick to, so the legs got very generous squirts of hobby glue
Image
And the beads poured in, followed by a bunch more glue.
Image
More parts cleaned up, shoulder still to do
Image
Quite impressed with the texture they got on the cape
Image
Better pic of the metal parts.
Image
Ok, thats pretty much everything cleaned up till primer reveals and more issues.
Image

The arms, helmet, rocketpack etc will be painted seperatley as the pose means it would be near impossible to get to the torso under the arms etc.

Thats it for now as I have a club build to get done soon and I want to order a set of the Minitaire paints to use on Boba.
Will be back on this in a few weeks

Ok
Very small amount of work done on this but I thought I better get an update going as I hope to get more done in the next couple of weeks
Now my new airbrushes and paits have arrived ill be able to finish up some projects that have been languishing for a while.

Vallejo light grey primer was applied lightly over the whole kit.
The parts that will be cloth were painted with Minitaire Base Grey
Image
Image

These paints are fantastic so if you get a chance I highly recommend trying them.
Hopefully more colourful updates coming soon

Ok
small update again but apparently some tortoise once said going slow will make ya win, or something cheesy like that.

First random splashes of colur thanks to minitaire, im not being careful with the painting to try and keep the weather and worn look start at the paint.
Image

Image

Base colour on the cape thing, this will end up closer to a muddy brown eventually.

Image

Some brown for the belt, helmet and cords around the shoulder

Image

Just getting some random colour down on the metal parts which will be tidied up later

Image

Slow progress as he goes back in the tray while i finish off my local club build, see ya at xmas Boba.

Ok, update time.
I have been working on this in the new year but some PC issues have kept the updates on my camera ......... till now (or when I uploaded them)

He is out of the box and seeing the light of day again so this is the restart point with the yellow done, the pockets done and a light grey mist to knock back the colours.
Image

First wash of many, ill be doing these as I go to try and get the look of lots of buildup over the months of hunting bountys
Image

Pockets, kneepads etc here. Pockets done with a different base colour as im sure they will get more sun/wear.
Image

Too much wash but thats the joy of waterbased wash, it can be cleaned off easily
Image

Base of the rifle is done, hopefully this will give a mottled look once the topcoat goes on
Image

And this is how i opened up his hand for the rifle, these are great tools when you need to go crazy with part removal
Image

Small update pic, starting to come together, in a very grasshopper kind of way as im jumping from one part to another and back again.
Image

AK wash is ideal for the rifle IMO
Image

I also used it on the cape by painting on thick in the receses and then just using a brush damp w thinners to move out
Image
Image

Finally, he is no longer armless :-)
Image

And he has head ;-)
Image

Unfortunatley at this point i realise the proportions that I thought were out because of the lack of arms or head was actually because the instructions were wrong and he needs some surgery to remove a big band from his waist.
Image

so rather than him going into the sarlacc pit (you may call it the bin) he goes back into the drawer while i cool down.
Image

I sis shortly realise that is weekend coming is the last weekend ill have to work on this guy so he cam out again pretty quick and there will be more updates, and hopefully early next week.

On your last picture you posted, I can see on the instructions sheet , where it tells you to
Carve off that "darken" Band on the Torso! As you mentioned!

Glad you found out about it and will be addressing it in the near future!

He is tall that's for sure.
good luck with the repairs...

Ok, last update as I needed to get this finshed before next week as im out of town.

As mentioned the instructions on one side to show that part needs to be cut off, the confusion came looking at the other diagrams that showed more section so lession #1 study ya instructions and then make sure to double check and clarify any discrepiancys.

Ok, repair time, i was able to split him back down the original seam
Image

Luckily soft vynil is easy to cut and it was easy to remove the offending section with scissors and a quick sand got it ready to reassemble.
Image

While I had him apart some more weight was added to counteract the weight of the gun.
Image

First coats of paint on backpack, and yes the reference shot from the movie do show it as more blue than green.
Image

Heavy wash
Image

After wiping it off again it looks far more used
Image

Body reassembled, still need a lot of detial work and cleanup of boots.
Image

Backpack attached easily, thats one thing ill give the kit, lots of surface area on the parts that need to be joined.
Image

Time to start the chipping using VMA Steel and Aluminum
Image
Image

Antenna/Scope thing attached to helmet, this is the part I see coming loose in travel
Image

A coat of Klear on the vison and and dotted over the chipping gives a nice change of texture
Image

So that is Boba Fett done.
Finished pics available here. http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=5175

Thanks for all the views and comments, the encoragement deffanatley helped get this over the line.
