Airfix 1/72 Me110C/D build

Post by Gav0909 »

So I started building this a while ago, and it got put on the shelf when "shiny things" came along.

But I have said I should finish the kits on the shelf before I do anymore new ones. So I got this down, dusted it off and started at it again. Now I bought Eduards PE set for this plane, which has a full replacement PE cockpit tub and everything. Frankly that was too much for me, so I used a lot of the detail bits to enhance the plastic cockpit instead. I had gotten the main build done and primed, but still had lots of extras to do that really should have been done before I primed it!

Anyway this is the progress made up until last night.

How it started.

Elevator and rudder trim tab actuators....(please bear in mind this is a 1/72 kit! These parts are tiny!)

PE details for the landing gear, oleos, brake lines and hub detail

Wing mass balances....

Antennae loop

Hahah, awful preshading.....

RLM 65 on the underside

RLM 70 & RLM 71 camo on the upper surfaces

I gloss coated it last night, but not happy with it, so will give it a coat of Klear on top of that later and then oil wash the panel lines and do the decalling.

C&C welcome.

So more progress. I got this gloss coated, but added a layer of Klear over that as the gloss didn't give an even coat.

You can see on the tail especially.
Image

Then I gave it an oil wash, but I have this issue where the wash separates a bit, you can see it on the aileron there..
Image

Bad picture of once the wash was cleaned up
Image

I found that once the oil wash started to dry, that it looked more grey than black on the upper surfaces. So I went back along the lines with an acrylic wash instead and was much happier with the effect. But I forgot to take any pics of that.

I also started the decals as well last night. Upper surfaces and right hand side are done, with left hand side and underside to do still. I was going to use the sharks mouth that is part of this scheme, but the decals won't conform to the various curves of the nose properly. I tried cutting the decal slightly to allow it to sit, but it didn't work. So I think I will say to hell with accuracy and use the funky bumble bee nose art from the other scheme.

Pics of that later.

Cheers

Relatively new tooling yes, cockpit detail was as basic as their older planes though, but the general kit had more details and obviously recessed panel lines. Fit was good though, and it built nicely.

Its more than a job for Microsol and set. Decal just doesn't bend round the curves without bunching up, will try and take a pic later to show.

Its just not going to work I don't think.
