building a Mig-15 in 1:72 scale class 101

I just like the sound of the title
it sounds like it is a actuall class you can follow in school
too bad i am a loussy teacher and i don't know all that much about building plane kits
but the second reason is that this is the 101st entry in this huge group build
a true ISM record

So for this entry i will be building on of the 4 kits from this big kit
wich is the 1:72 scale Mig-15 Royal class

The version of the Mig-15 that i will be building is the UTI wich is a 2 seat trainer version

there are 2 resin fueltanks and ejection seats aswell but those aren't needes for the plane i will be building


the instructions and a seperate painting and marking instruction book
and a small correction note wich i will have to keep in mind as it is about the UTI kit


this will be the version i will be building
it was flown by 2 pilots but 1 of them was the first man in space
no one other then Soviet hero Yuri Gagarin
he also chrashed in this plane
but i want to do more research before i will put the history of the plane and other information in this thread

Now i will put up the instructions to build the kit so there will be a lot of pictures about that part

It is my opinion that Eduard instruction are pretty easy to follow and usually they are very clear
so this should cause any problems

So that is the beginning of this thread
i will be building the other 3 planes aswell wich are a Mig-15 fighter and 2 Mig-15 Bis fighters
i will keep a seperate build thread for those in the WIP section of the forum
and that concludes my intro for this build
i am really looking forward to building these little jets as i have low mojo levels with my other builds at the moment
so these should break that up i hope

There are 4 kits in the box with some resin , masks and PE
what seems to be a big difference is that the Royal class kits are Eduards own molds with their own upgrade stuff and the addition of a puece of the plane and a glass with a logo for the plane fron the kit
so basicly a very much upgraded bunch of profi packs in 1 box
And maybe because they are limited edition kits aswell
they only make a small number of them
the bigger ones like the Spitfire ,BF109 and BF110 are getting rare at the moment so they go for pretty high prices by now
but that is more for collectors , i still bought them to build them

Myself have another entry planned ...I have a Mig 15 Bis profipack from Eduard or a Sturmovik from Tamiya , I think will let the MiG 15 for the shinny GB later in the year , maybe I still have time to do the Sturmovik

But will follow this thread with interest as one way or another I will build the MiG 15 ...but could be a good option

Looks like a great kit! Eduard do some lovely stuff. A bit too small for my fingers, but I'm sure you'll make it/them look awesome (take that smcg!). Classic Russian jet, good luck buddy

i will be building all of them Chief but they will be split up in 2 buildthreads because the 3 others don't have the Soviet markings
this UTI is the only one that has them

The profipack should be about the same as the ones in my kit António
i only have some resin seats that maybe missing in the pfofipack box
but to fully update this one i would have to buy 4 pe sets to add a few extra parts to the seats for the hamdles and small things like that
i will do them all out of the box because i don't really see the point of adding a lot of resin and photo etch stuff to a plane of this size
i will be building a fully upgraded plane soon enough as i have the Danger zone F-14 wich already has a bunch of goodies but i added all the other stuff from Eduard except the "remove before flight" tags and i have a Master model Vulcan canon to replace the kit gun wich doesn't look all that great
i want that one to be opened up so.it will be visible and that gun has brass barrels so there actually are 6 individual barrels
But before i get to that project i want to clear my bench and like you i have some stuff in the stash for the Shiny stuff
like a Eduard Mig-21 and Sabre
maybe i will build both or just 1 ,i haven't decided yet

they aren't the best looking planes but they do have something about them
from what i have seen so far they are pretty easy to build and the pieces that i put together by now fit very well
so this should be a fun build to do in between bigger builds

the eduard kits are really nice kits and worth checking if you like to build planes
i don't k ow about the pricetag in the US but overhere in Europe they have a pretty good price
for this kit i paid about 10 euro's per plane and that is with pe and masks
so that is a very nice price for a kit

I have been looking at the Royal class kits for a wile and.think they are nice kits
i found this one at a show for a very nice price so i took it with me
to give the whole Royal class kits a try
I am a big Eduard fan already and all of my planes except 2 are Eduard kits
but most of the Royal class kits are very expensive
but looking at the recent releases from Eduard i noticed that they basicly are like the profi pack kits but with a few more goodies
i have 1 of the 4 kits ready for paint and i am planning to get the others including the UTI for this entry at the same point today
and i will post the first little update once i have them cockpits ready to be installed in the fuselages

Hi guys
First off , sorry it took me so very long to post a update
I completely forgot that i didn't post one yet
And the UTI is ready for paint at the moment so time to catch up


The build starts with the floor of the cockpit and some of the other parts like the rear wall and the back seat instrument panel
The pe front for that panel will be added after i painted the interior


The seats and the bay for the nose wheel where build up next


Because i was curious about the fit of the kit i tested it
The fuselage parts don't have any locating pins so i wanted to know if it has a seamline and if so how bad would it be
But judging by this it isn't too bad


The sides where put on to see gow well they fit and i can't complain about that
The parts all fit very well in this version of the MiG-15



After painting the interior pe was placed


The black parts of the seats where dry brushed with vallejo panzer aces dark rubber wich in my opinion is a nice color to use on black surfaces
Then the pe harnas was placed
This actually has a lot of detail for parts that are this small


The instrument panel was put together
I noticed it was a bit crooked after i made the photo so i corrected that later on


The internal parts of the fuselage where painted with Alclad white aluminium


Then the wings where put together and the fuselage was buttoned up
I did use some washes on the seats and interior but i think the photo's got lost when i had to reset my phone a while back and i guess i failed to upload all the photo's before i did that


Because i noticed that the wings would't fit super close i decided to try something new (for me anyway)
I used some molten sprue as the glue
So i put on wuite a bit on the wing roots and just pushed the wing on it
The molten sprue will be pushed out but in the proces it will fill up the gap between the wing and the wing root
The excess can be whiped away without leaving much residue and only requires a little bit of sanding to get smooth again


Here you can see the filler being pushed out
I found out the front of the wing can use a little bit of sanding aswell
But i did that once all the wings and such where in place on this one and the 3 others i was building


The wings and elevators are in their places
The filling did work quite well if i do say so myself


Next up was the nose (allthough this is one of the others)


So with the nose fitted and sanded
Wich was really needed by the way The fit there was not as good as i would have liked
I started with the nose wheel wich is just 1 part
And the nose wheel bay doors and the single cannon that it has where placed aswell


Next where the main landing gears and the last small parts that go underneath the plane


The canopy parts where cleaned and prepped
I decided to put them on in a closed position
Mainly because they are rather thick and i didn't like the look of these bulky parts when they where opened up
A small advantage was that i don't need to mask the interior for the painting proces


There where a few parts that needed to be placed and painted before i could glue the canopy on


And then the canopy was put in it's place
The fit of these parts was good but in the instructions they mention the use of a pe part that should go on the front part of the canopy wich resembles the sealing of the canopy
But they don't tell you to only use it if you have the canopy open so i didn't use it after i testfitted that part


And then it was finished
All i need to do now is to mask the canopy and it can be primed and painted
The wheels will be painted seperately but other then those parts everything is glued on
I decided that i would't place anything under the wings like the bombs or the fueltanks wich could be drop tanks or fixed tanks
Because i placed those on the other ones i have build so i didn't feel the nees to do the same with this one

And that is all i have for now
I hope to get back with another update soon but i have 2 new builds that will be painted the same way as this build so i hooe to paint all of them at once instead of having multiple sessions with the Alclad paints wich make the whole cave stink to high heaven

It is mostly because of the photo etch for the cockpit
They came with the kit but you can get them as a seperate set
I think they call the Zoom sets and i have to say i like them
I have them for most if not nearly all my planes and helicopters
It looks much better then a decal for the instrument and you don't have to paint all the small details
But it was harder to work with this set then others because of the scale
I build 1/48 scale planes and 1/35 scale armor and helicopters most of the time so the parts are a bit bigger with those

Hi guys
So i think it is time for the final update
As some of may have seen on the ISM facebook page i finished this build yesterday

So here are the last steps of this build

I started by giving it a metal look
I used Alclad paints for this wich are pretty specific on how to use them them so i started out with the grey primer
That was covered with the gloss black base and pnce that was dry i applied the white aluminium topcoat
I sprayed a few test pieces and comparred those to the little piece of MiG you get in the Royal class kit
The white aluminium seems to be the best match out of the metallic paints i have


I then mixed some grey by mixing neutral grey and white from vallejo to match the Aqueous color for the wheelbays
This was brushpainted on there as i didn't have much room to mask everything and this was faster then masking and spraying
The wheels where painted with a mix of Panzer Aces dark rubber and modelcolor black (both Vallejo)


After painting the last few details like the small sensors on the bottom i gloss coated it with Aqua gloss


After thw gloss coat i applied the decals
They didn't sink in the panel lines very well
Even after several coats of micro sol but i think the very shallow panel lines may have something to do with that
After that a second coat of Aqua gloss and then i gave it a wash with Mig productions dark wash


Once the wash was cleaned up i gave it a coat of Vallejo satin varnish and removed the masks from the canopy


And once that was done i called it finished

And that is just about all i have for this build this
The kit is pretty good and if you enjoy 1/72 scale planes then i would recommend it
Allthough i prefer the somewhat larger planes in 1/48 myself but out of the 4 kits in the Royal Class kit this was the best in my opinion but you cam get these as a Weekend edition and Profi pack aswell in case you want one
