SR-71 Double Yolker

Post by pourquoi61 »

I had so much fun with the last egg plane I thought that I should do another, "In fact..." I thought "How about a zwilling?" So here goes.
Image
I sprayed Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Grey into the cockpit and on the control surfaces of the plane for colour contrast later.
Image
Also the wheels and shock cones were painted white.
Image
I glued the top half of the engine nacelles to the top half of the aircraft body, then I removed the control surfaces.
Image
I marked on the nacelles where I was going to make holes for the strengthening rods and made the holes, once both halves had been glued.
Image
Image
Image
It is a bit rough! :eeek: I built both halves of both aircraft, glued on the under carriage, placed the rods in position and added rear flap. The under carriage was added to give the aircraft rods the correct level before glueing into place.

Plastic card and super glue are used to start the filling process.

This is the first time that I have ever kit bashed.

,Next I masked one of the canopies, as the other would be sprayed over.
Image
Image
The connecting section was filled with plastic card and filler. To make the joint section a little more believable, I took the end part off another kit from the spare part box and stuck that on.
Image
Image
I glued the canopies on and sprayed the kit with Tamiya XF- 18 Medium Blue, but not a solid colour leaving some highlights.I then mixed a small amount of Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black with the original colour, and sprayed some low lights.
Image
Image
Tamiya Clear X-22 was sprayed all over the model and let dry over night before decal application.

Now the clear coat is on, time for the decals. I had to use the kit decals but as this was a "special" plane I had to not use all or just one plane type. So I did a little mix and match".

Just the under carriage and jet nozzles to go on.

So today I removed the cockpit masking, painted the last remaining wheels black ready for the final reveal.
