Revell 1/72 SAAB J-35J Draken

Looking good mate! I might need to get me some of those paints for a couple of upcoming builds.

I did my 1/48 Draken free hand and I think it's a bit too soft. From all the pictures I have seen it should be almost hard edge but not quite. Although in scale that would probably be hard edge, but I think it looks better with a bit soft edge. So I guess it's down to if you want to be correct or do it the way you think looks the best.

I will buy black and white primer and I will probably never use any other primer from now on...

I think I will go for a semi-hard edge, where I use white-tac "worms" to give a little softness to the edges. You are probably right that the most accurate would be to have a hard edge, but I think that it will look better if there is a small transition to blend the colours a bit.

Hey Guys!

I have done some more cammo-painting...

Masking done... My attempt was to leave a controlled overspray between the different areas of the cammo...


...but it didn't turn out as planned


I put the white-tac too close to the borders, so the olivegreen didn't coat enough in some areas. Also the edges where not as soft as I expected them to be.
So I did some freehand painting of the edges to blend the colours more.


It's not a flawless paintjob, but it will do
But I must say that I'm really pleased with the colours, I think they are spot on!

The bottom of the aircraft is painted with Blågrå/Bluegrey 058H, but I thought that it had too much blue in it so added som white to the mix.




I'm happy with that, next step will be to do some detail paint around the air intake and the radome.

Hi!

I had a busy week so there have only been small steps forward with the build, but that's better than nothing, I guess...

The front of the air intakes are made of fibreglass, which makes the paint peel off. This is the light gray areas in the picture below:



I tried to make a unregular structure drybrushing White, Gray and Khaki Drab. This is tricky stuff and I'm not sure about the result, but I can't com up with anything better.



I prepped the pitot tube with a Pink base....


...and sprayed it with XF-3 Flat Yellow.


Tommorow I will mask and paint the pitot tube, radome and air intake edges black.

Ok... Small update tonight

When I need to cut tape with decent accuracy I always use a piece of glass from a photoframe, instead of the cutting mat.


Pitot tube, nose cone and the rim of air intakes masked and painted with XF-1 Flat Black.

...and it's time for another small update:

Have been working with the undercarriage today.

Bluegray 058H on the hatches:


Painted the landing gear with XF-26 and scratched the surface with a toothpick to get some wear:


Had an idea to start working on the cockpit; but I'm too tired start fiddling with PE and double canopy masks at 10pm..


...I'll do that tomorrow.

Hopefully I will finish the build and paintjob tomorrow so I can seal the surfaces with a gloss coat and carry on with the decals

Hey Guys,

I finally got myself started on the dreaded cockpit canopy... The PE wasn't difficult to figure out what to but I had to spend 15 minutes reading the masking and painting instructions before I decided to skip them and just go ahead



I have also painted the leading edges on the wings and tailfin using Vallejo Acrylic Metal "White Alu". These paints will be my "to-go" metal paints in the future - I will probably only Alclad or other smelly paints unless I need to.

I will also complete the ordnance and some FOD-covers meanwhile the varnishes and weathering are drying.

Hey Guys!

I have put on the decals now



However, the Flying Colours decals didn't react well with Micro Sol and I probably "overdosed" it on the large white digits on the wing topside.



I left it over-night to settle and dry up and this morning I had a look at it again - no improvement really....

There are basically two things to do (No - I will not bin the model... that's not an option):
a) carefully sand down the wrinkles, apply clear coat, mask and paint the numbers
b) do some funky decal-chipping !



Sooo... after some major indecisiveness and fretting about this of an hour or so I started to carefully scrape off the wrinkles and trying to mimic the pattern on the picture above. It looked like crap....

So i decided to go all in! "Go HAM or go Home" - It's time for Brazilian Decal Chipping

Using a "ball" of masking tape (with sticky side out) I dabbed the decal to rip off larger chunks in a (sort of) controlled manner..



Some weathering on top of that and I think we are all set....

Phew... with all the drama done for now I decided to start working on the ordnance - weapons always make me relaxed...

I will use two AIM-9J (looks like the RB24J) from the Hasegawa kit on the front pylons. The RB27s will sit under the wing rails.

Hey Guys!

Short update; this build goes a forward in tiny steps right now, lot's of small details that needs to be done after each other....

After a night sleep and some constructive feedback from my IPMS buddies I realised that the decal chipping might have gone a bit OTT, especially the digit 4, so I did some decal repair today:



That looks a little bit more balanced I think.

Also I painted the outside of the canopy, the "fireworks" and some misc. stuff



Those tiny yellow things are FOD-covers, but I'm not sure that I will use them. But I make them just in case...

Yeah, I agree. But I guess it's part of their business model... The upside is that I now have ordnance for 4-5 future builds...

Hi!

More work done yesterday and today.

FOD-covers (still haven't decided if I shold use these)...





I did a sloppy job on the outside of the canopy.. Can't figure out what happened here, either I have really bad light in my spray-booth or I had a temporary loss of brain performance (brain-fart...)


Anyway, the interior colour is shining through, so it needs a couple of layers of olive green. Easy to fix!

Weathering in progress...

I'm using a mix of black and burnt umber oil thinned with odourless turpentine.

It's not much work left... Looking forward to finish it this weekend!
