On the bench Tamiya 1:35 Willys MB

Started this the end of last year but now the new mancave is almost complete its time to dust it of and get back to the grindstone.




And some pictures of the old Italeri #314 Ford GPW. Sorry for the quality of the pics but these where taken with my old phone and semi on the run. To bad most of the detail work is semi lost in the blur. I'm pretty please with the IRL result it being only my second build in a good 25 that has some scratch built, aftermarket and photo-etch on it.

Thanks for the feedback on this little beauty, down below you will find my first reply to your questions.

For the olive drab I mixed up my own special cocktail, should still have the recipe lying around in on of the moving boxes. I hand painted this using Vallejo Model Color paints. For weathering I uses Vallejo Pigments. Dark Umber and Burnt sienna. Washes where Dark Brown and Rust also from Vallejo. To get that rubbed down look of dirt and grime on the hood and windshield frame, I applied the pigment direct to the flatcoat after decalling. I the brush applied a light layer of Vallejo Decal Fix (a watered down dull-coat varnish). The windows were dirtied up using Vallejo Model Color Smoke again with a hairy stick to get an uneven result. The windscreen wiper area was masked with a D.I.Y. Mask of Scotch Magic Tape.

I'll have a rummage thru the boxes tomorrow and i'll shoot you my recipe in a pm or something. I'm quite new here so it'll be my first pm. please bear with me on that.

Have been pondering A similar diorama when I was a kid. The thing keeping me from doing it at the time was the lack of a decent kit in a 32nd or 35th scale for the chopper. At the time the only kit available that had something that came close was the Jacques Cousteau exploration vessel in like 1:stupidly small. What kit are you planning to use might be a nice to do a buddy build or something. Still have a couple of un-built jeeps in the stash and have always loved MASH.

I mixed up my own brew for the actual colors seen as non of the straight paints fitted the bill of the look that I was after for this build.

I recently got another US AVF kit also from Italeri and it had a small bottle of Vallejo thrown in. Alternatively I presume this could also be used if you ar not that keen on mixing your own colors.

Your "weathering" representation is exactly what i am looking to achieve for my MASH

The only Bell H-13H chopper i could find is from Revell - kit # 85-5313
This is quite an old kit & not the best scale representation. The tail boom tube diameter is HUGE !!!
(Someone please release a better kit!)

No worries on the mix ratio's and paint and weather info. Share and share alike is my philosophy when it comes to modeling.

Luckily my break from modeling wasn't that long, about half as long as your sabbatical. Once I got back in the groove I found my skills came back like a flash to be honest.

If it's just the tailboom that's not quite scale accurate you could try a scratch built one from either evergreen strut or if you are feeling real brave from stretched sprue.

Thanks for the update on the chopper kit, looks like I will be doing some retail therapy over the weekend sourcing one for my own stash.

Managed to get some bench time in over the weekend and last night here are some update photo's



Got the PE bumpers and bumperets on along with the first bits of PE on the engine. Also started on getting the spark plugs wired.



As this build will have the rear bench removed, prepared the hull for the PE details to be added.
