Tamiya Ducati 1199 "Senna", 1/12th Scale, now my second bike

Post by FuzzSquad »

After finishing and rather enjoying building the R1, I though why not build another one. Taking insperation from Pauls "Senna", I thought I'd try my hand at one. Also a good friend owns a 916 "Senna" that's displayed in a museum in Aberdeen, and a 1199 Tricolore (I think that how you spell it).
Other than the Tamiya front forks (if they ever arrive) it will be a sort of basic build, as the funds are slightly limited at the moment, as 18 months down the line, I'm still off with the damned knee injury. Anyway that just means more time for modelling.
Anyway here we go, you'll all probably know the box by now.
Image

And the bike I'm hoping to get near too, one thing I noticed is that the heads on the bike have a black outer cover, I would like to recreate this but honestly my ability falls way short on that front.
Image

The decals from Blue Stuff, which are out of stock on Hiroboy, but I managed to trace a set from a website on the continent.
Image

And the paint rom Zero Paints, that I bought from Hiroboy. It's the first time I've used Hiroboy, who I'm well impressed by their service, even sending text messages, which I thought was a nice touch. I've never painted with Zero Paints before, so hopefully it will go ok. The paint will either be coated with Tamiya TS13 or Zero Paints pre mixed 1k.

Yeah, I love bikes but never thought about building a bike kit, until I saw Paul's beautiful Senna. Good luck with your project!

Cheers mate, I hope I can get to a fraction somewhere near his quality.

First thing was the engine, now the main colour for this one is Vallejo Aluminium, which I think is a nicer shade than the Tamiya Flat Aluminium and isn't so harsh. The rocker covers were then painted as per the instructions. I then clear coated it using Alclad2 ALC600 Aqua Gloss, did a slight wash just to add some depth, then clear coated it again.
My apologies for the picture quality as I was using the iPhone for these pics.
Image

Image

Next up was the exhaust, now I painted this with Tamiya Titanium Silver, I then taped up some of the joins, sprayed some Tamiya Smoke, followed by Tamiya Clear Blue. I then coated it in Winsor & Newton Galeria Matt, which I still can't get matt enough for me. Have any of you got any suggestions for a decent matt coat.
Image

Next up was the, what I believe is the airbox, now I know the box has several silver circles, but I tried painting these in and it looked a mess, I then sprayed over again with Tamiya Semi Gloss Black. The front part was then sprayed as per the instructions.
I then decaled it, where I forgot to secure the bottle of Microset, and knocked it flying. The Mrs was not a happy bunny as I stunk the house out. I then coated it again with the Galeria matt.
Image

Image

I then joined it all together, I've still to add a small section that looks like a water pump between the heads, but I'll get to that.
Image

Image

Image

Well that's how it stands at the moment. I won't be doing any modelling this weekend as my son, is through in Edinburgh for a two day seminar, (Age 12 1st Dan Black Belt), so have a good weekend guys and happy modelling.

Cheers for the comments guys, it makes building these things worthwhile.

Anyway on with the work, next up is the exhaust, I thought I'd try something a bit different to it, so I've added some heat marks/exhaust soot marks to the silencers, just to show its been used. I also drilled out the exhaust holes. Then added a bit of plasticard further in at the back, just to make it a bit more real looking. Hopefully it looks ok.

And fitted

By the looks of it your going to give Paul a run for his money with this build, would love to see both bikes side by side with both builders to compare notes would be a nice watch on the channel if you ask me...

Why is that you put something together then you realise you've forgotten a part or a decal.
So off came the exhausts for these two small decals.

Image

Next up was the rear swing arm, chain and sprocket.

Image

Image

Now excuse me here as I ain't a biker, thus sometimes the bike part terminology is beyond me.

This is the foot peg area on the offside of the bike.

Image

And the foot peg/suspension area on the nearside of the bike. I love the tiny decal on the suspension.

One final bit for today Paul mentioned the carbon on the front wing was a mare, I can concur it's a absolute mare. One tiny section finished.

Assembly questions.
I'm starting to build this same model. But In Step 3 (Attaching the frame) with parts B24, B28,B23 & B38, there is a NO GLUE symbol. While I have tried to understand why NOT to use GLUE, I can't. It seems that at least B24, B28 & B23 should be glued.

Mate I was puzzled by this as well, the "do not cement" instruction symbol is in a rather unfortunate position.

It doesn't refer to that part where the 4 parts B23, B24, B28, and B38 join together, this is the airbox, and trust me they need glue.

It refers to the tiny polly cap that fits into part "C9", that you do not glue.

God knows why Tamiya placed that symbol up in the top right corner next to the airbox, very confusing

Hi there folks, over the last week or so I've been steadily building up parts for the bike concentrating on the front and rear.

First of was finishing the front fender, I nicknamed this part "The Bitch" for obvious reasons. This did take a fair bit of time and patience, and a large amount of good ole Microset and Microsol.

This next part is the rear suspension Spring guard which is normally painted Tamiya Semi Gloss Black, but for this build I decided to lay down some of the same carbon effect decal I used on the front fender.
Image

And attached to the bike, not the best of photos
Image

Next up were the tyres and wheels, for the tyres I sanded off the seam line, which for some reason was a bit of a pain, this might be down to me sitting outside in the sunshine doing the sanding down.
The front wheel.... notice the error on my part, yep I broke off the valve, I've still to order the metal valves for them, I will get to it.
Image

And the rear wheel, I was quite pleased here with my hand painted hub nut and washer, this is the first time I've managed to keep a steady hand when painting something like this.

My order for the Tamiya front fork upgrade kit arrived after waiting a month for it to come from Japan (bought on Amazon), next to it are some Micromesh sheets and the fork upgrade kit for my upcoming Yamaha build which arrived a week after ordering also from Japan (bought on eBay).

Then it was on with the front brakes. I used the kits plastic parts for this and I painted them all up, then I found out that the fork upgrade kit came with the tiny rivets between the black and aluminium parts. I then drilled out the plastic raised rivets, and sanded it flagr. At this point, I had spoiled some of the paint surface so off came all of the paint.
I then repainted them and glued and inserted the tiny rivets.
Image

They were then attached to the wheel

Cheers Paul, yeh it's a great kit, I can see why you've got into bikes, compared to some of the aircraft I've build the fit and finish of these kits are excellent.

The only issue if you can call it that was they fork upgrade kit was just a bit on the fiddly side to build up, but that's only a very minor issue.

Cheers

Here's some pics of the tail section panels and the fuel tank all build up for the test fit. Hopefully over the next couple of days I'll start all the paintwork on the panels.

Like it?

Yes.

You dudes need to stop with the bikes, you're making it look so easy and your builds are so fantastic my wallet will soon be empty... It's like all the best things about model making condensed into one kit; details, a bit of puzzle solving, details, weathering, details, and crisp lines. And superb details.

That's all the base coat paint on, I'm really impressed with these paints and how easy they go on.

Image

I've then applied the first gloss coats, I debated wither to put down the decals before or after a coat of clear lacquer. I decided to give it a coat of lacquer first.

Here's the tank. Not to bad still to let it cure then I'll give it a polish.

That's all the decals on. Now comes the really nervous part of covering them with clear laquer. Several mist coats to start with me thinks. How long do you guys leave the decals before covering them with lacquer, I normally leave them about 24 hrs, is this ok or would you leave them longer.
Anyway here's how it stands at the moment.

I'm still very limited as to what can do as I had a major knee op last week, then there was complications where I ended up back in hospital.
Anyway yesterday SWMBO brought me tray with some of the painted parts and I gave a couple of them some wet sanding and a polish up. For my first time using Zero Paints I'm quite pleased with the results.
Here's the tank, which is just sat in place at the moment.
