Derelict T-62

Post by Tomi »

I've always build WW2 armor, but when TankArt 3 was released I decided to build something more modern. In that book was great abandoned T-62, something you might see when looking pictures from Kabul tank cemetary. So, went to my local hobby shop, got Trumpeter T-62 and ordered MIG turret from Ebay and then...nothing  As always, plans changed and something "better" came along. Well, now it's time to tackle that project.

Kit
Image
I have gone through the parts and this looks nice, I'm no expert but searching through web I have learned that there are certain problems. I have no plans to correct them, just add some welds. Interesting point is that while box art show OMsh tracks, kit actually includes RMsh tracks.

Parts
Image
MIG turret, Friul tracks and assorted Voyager etch. I got bit carried away with etch stuff, my original plan was just get stowage boxes but there it is... Let's see how much I actually will use.

And finally some inspiration
Image
I'm not looking to make exact copy of TankArt tank, and this actually looks quite nice. Obviously I'm going to use TankArt book as reference also.

There it is, I probably start this sometime this evening and updates will follow.

If you are on Facebook, there's this group "The T-62 & T-64 research group". There's loads of great pictures and one guy is also building T-62, there's some good pics of fuel lines etc.

My first ever modern tank so some preparation is in order 8-) Ok, today I worked little with lower hull, suspension arms are not glued yet as I need to do wheels first.
Image

I'm using kit original canvas cover for gun shield as I'm going to build this range finder removed, little sanding and fit is near perfect.
Image

Finally, huge casting block on turret  I'm going to remove this at work, we have belt sander there so it should make this a breeze. Front applique armor though is more tricky to trim to size.
Image

That's it for now, probably not much progress ahead this weekend since we are going to visit my mother in law :shifty:

Brass wire or suitable soldering wire works fine, as connectors you can use insulation from thin electric wire. Here's another cool link, proper T-62 walkaround: http://www.dishmodels.ru/wshow.htm?np=1 ... T#blockpre

brass, lead, electrical wire and even stretched sprue and evergreen strut are all very suitable material for scratch building hardline and hoses on aircraft and afv. If you want a more flexible option option Püch does a rubber hose material. For small / thin lines, hoses and wire antennas EZ-Line or Rigg That from Ushi van der Rosten are the best options. To top it all off there is also the old world option of synthetic sowing thread.

As always happy modeling and keep sticking styrene.

To create couple point of interests to model, I decided to modify two wheels with hubs missing and punctured fuel tank. Probably small hole from bullet or shrapnel, years of exposure to elements and hole is now bigger. Both features doesn't look much now, but once painted and weathered they will be whole lot different.

I decided to go with kit fenders... and kit stowage boxes. It's not the first time I buy etch set and then decide not to use it, bad habit but what do you do : Anyway kit parts are nice enough for this job, and couple of undercuts with sharp hobby knife they will be nicer. To create another point of interest to left side of tank is to use T-55 heat shield on top of exhaust, strange but plausible field mod I think. Material here is from frozen food container, actually I made rear fenders for T-34-122 from this same stuff. I made this part for Tiran 4 project that halted two years ago, and it's very likely that it never will be finished so if not anything else it's good for scavenging parts :thumb2:

Both wires (brass & copper) are 0.4mm. Actually there is two different gauges in these pipes like in this pic: http://www.dishmodels.ru/picture/wlk/02 ... 537495.jpg but I didn't bother this time around.

With small razor saw, I know now how the escape from Alcatraz must have felt  Actually I didn't need to remove it all, just edges so that turret fits in place and rotates freely. Anyway, productive day yesterday, I got turret done:

Scavengers have liberated most of the periscopes.

Then rear deck, I made frame for large mesh screen from extra bits of etch:

And there she is now:
Image

Still some small bits missing and welds etc, then it's time for tracks.

Tracks done. For those who think single link track are tedious, here's pro tip: make track in set of tens (clean ten shoes, then assemble, repeat) until you have desired number. Then just connect them.

Thanks. Right now I'm contemplating how much details I'm going to add still, I don't want this to get out of hand. I could tell a sad story about Tiran 4 project that really just sits there gathering dust, I was really obsessed to get everything right with that one and finally just lost all interest. Bad case of AMS  Since then I have learned to make things simpler way.

I too often start a build without having properly thought about how the end product should look which is why I'm now trying to discipline myself to thoroughly plan a build end-to-end before I start.
hopefully it'll save me time and a lot less frustration.

Exactly. In these days I'm mostly happy with set of Friuls and replacement barrel, this particular build is exception to certain extent. I still might add some welds, tie downs for stowage boxes and external fuel tanks but that's about it really. About that Tiran 4 project, I'm expecting Takom T-54B to arrive and my plan is to make that Tiran 4 so while original project will never see daylight there will be Tiran someday... I hope.

Thank you for your kind words gentelemen : Tracks, not so shiny any more. Blackened with AK Interactive stuff, then treated with various products found in my stash (brown wash, track wash etc) to look like they have been unused for some time. No shiny worn bits here
Image

Tip; to make those Friul tracks sit properly over drive sprocket, the disc in middle needs to be bevelled on inner face. With my mad photo manipulation skills I drew a red arrow to show exact point
Image

And while we are talking about details, I replaced kit parts with these brackets made of styrene and "welded" them with Magic Sculpt.
Image
There's also missing bolt detail on etched bit, that is not intentional as I managed to drop one of those tiny bolts and it's gone! But missing bolts are not uncommon with these beat up vehicles so this mishap actually works for my benefit.

This build needs only couple of welds added and then it's ready for primer.

Well, copper wire was supplied with MIG kit and brass wire I already had in my stash, I decided to use both and make it look like it's been repaired at field. Good hobby shops (or other handicraft stores) should have brass wire, I would suggest to get at least 0.4 and 0.5mm. Also very thin solder wire is great for electric wiring, or you can use actual copper wire from thin electric wires. Soldering wire is also great for tubing as it comes with various thicknesses and is easy to bend shape. Brass wire can be bit springy but after annealing it will bend to your will easy.
I would suggest that you check your references and make shopping list accordingly, hope this helps.

Thanks 8-) Light grey tone is AK Interactive's dust effects sprayed with airbrush, it gives a nice oxidized look to tracks. Not just rust browns here. Otherwise thinks are looking bit dark...

Image

I'm using Games Workshop brand spray primer, it's most of the time my number 1 choice (Tamiya grey primer is another). It seems that tomorrow I'll be spraying rust tones on this one, and then I need to figure out nice faded yellowish green tone as primary color.

Very nice work!

Looking forward to more.

I mixed Tamiya XF-73 with XF-4 for a nice Russian green. IFor a faded color I'd use a 2 to 1 ratio of XF-4 to XF-73 and use some XF-55 to lighten that up even further.

Sounds interesting, I might give that a try for something else. For this one I'm going with XF-67 nato green mixed with XF-3 flat yellow and XF-21 sky. For camo I will probably use XF-19 sky grey.

Rust base and details painted:
Image

Rust is XF-79 linoleum deck brown neat, radiation shields are brush painted with 1:3 mixture of Vallejo old wood : light grey and gun shield canvas is mix of same colors but this time 1:1. Radiation shield edges need little bit of tidying up but now I let this cure +24h and then it's time for some hairspray and green.

Main color and camo sprayed on. Initially I didn't like how camo turned out, shapes are way bigger than intented and whatnot... But then again, for field application... They are probably ok.
Image

Immediately after I had cleaned airbrush, I started chipping. On turret roof, radiation shielding was first step and that is almost bare of green paint. In real life material is somekind of fabric and paint chips from that quite easily.
Image

And here she is now. Had to take a break, my neck is killing me :ooops:
Image

Anyway, chipping is going beautifully. It's always bit nerve wrecking process, spraying from can is less than perfect (it's meant for hair so...) and I wasn't quite sure if layers were even. But, as always, it worked just fine. I also noticed that I had forgot to add couple of details to turret, always nice to notice such things at this point BUT... I can live with that. It just means that I have to improve my work with next project, and that's what modelling is basically about.
