Post by agaman79 »

hi i am now getting in to modelling again i have bought a kit but when painting it the paint finish was very rough any thoughts on what might of gone wrong i used the paint that came with the kit through an airbrush.

kit was 1:72 Victoria cross icons kit from airfix.

decals went on ok but the surface is just so rough??

Could you add some details? Like did you thin the paint? What with? Maybe what PSI you set the brush to? There's a bunch of factors that might be involved.

My first guess would be the paint is drying on its way from the gun to the surface so it doesn't level out.

assuming the paint was Tamiya, I would spray a little closer ( 4 inches) and add a few drops of retarder or possibly instead of Tamiya thinner add mr color leveling thinner with no retarder ... please use ventilation..

Try out some passes on some spare parts or plastic, or plastic spoons, or even just some paper. My sense is digger303 is right with using some levelling thinner or get a little closer with the brush.

I've never used Humbrol.

Now I might be wrong here, but I seem to remember reading that Tamiya acrylics are not the same as say AK, Mig or Vallejo and that the thinner is different too. It could be that Tamiya thinner just doesn't work well with Humbrol, I would post this in here http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewforum.php?f=54 and someone far more qualified than me will be able to answer you.

Lacquer ( Tamiya, Mr hobby) based as opposed to water based

I find Humbrol paints horrible to airbrush. I only use other brands (mainly Mr Hobby) now as nothing I tried worked.
