Revell 1/24 Shelby GT 500

Post by papatika »

Hi there!

Last summer a colleague of mine checked my stash while the rest of the guests enjoyed our BBQ party in the garden, and was begging to build this kit next. I was then in the middle of "New age Desert Rats" GB, and don't have enough space to keep more projects running at the same time. Then I had to finish a build started 2 yrs ago. Then "From Russia with love" GB... The time has come, I run out of excuses... ;-)

I build my last car in this scale still in the collage, around 20 yrs ago. It's bin a while... No real paint job, no airbrushing, no polishing, basically gluing and some details with a brush. How I built my kits at that time, and now... it's a different universe...

I was talking about excuses, but I was really excited about this build. But because the lack of experience I was a bit afraid, too. Especially because of the polishing job. The GAZ M1 built for "From Russia with love" GB was a kind of experimental project about how to prepare, paint and polish cars. Preparing and painting was no problem, the polishing... well... it was ok for that GB, for that car, for that scale. But still far from being satisfying for this one. Any help / suggestion is welcomed! :)

Now that I have talked the talk, let's walk the walk! :-)
(As usually I add my pics to a Google photo gallery, and Google like to mess up image links. Sorry for that in case it happens!)

Boxart is super! Kind of "build me right now!". :)
Image

The layout of sprues is well designed, carefully packed, and box is full with fine stuff. With the molding quality I'm not that happy anymore. Parts fit together really good, but removing all those seam lines is a tedious job. According to ScaleMates this kit was designed in 2008, with new tools, therefore I expected better molding quality.
Image

First step: engine.
This car will be a red one with white stripes, so I used this color on the engine's valve covers. Some more wiring weeds to be added, but it looks really nice oob, too.
Image

The engine bay is also nicely detailed, but don't really like the molding of the cables (especially the one in the upper right corner) and the battery (upper left corner). I still don't know how to paint the battery. Should be all black? If so, where are the edges? Arrrgh! It could be soooo nice! :wall:
Image

Next one: undercarriage
This part looks awesome! The springs for the front wheels are still missing, but you'll have a pic about it when done! :) Here I had some problems with the painting instructions. When I checked some reference pictures the undercarriage's color was the same as the body's color, obviously, because IRL they are painted together. On the instructions the whole part is black. Since I could not find enough pics to decide which part needs to be red, and which not, I painted it whole black.
Image

So, here I am now. Next I'd like to finish the undercarriage, add loads of wiring stuff to the engine, and do the interior. I'm thinking whether to use flocking on the floor, what color, and how to make it home. I already have an idea how to paint the interior. Oh, and I'd like to sleep a bit... ;)

Thanks for stopping by, leaving comment, sharing ideas, asking questions, whatever... :thumb1:

So, no more questions? Shall we continue then? :)

By adding the front suspension and the break disks the undercarriage is basically finished. Here are some pictures about it:
Image
Image
Image

I decided to have a two tone interior, with a dark gray and red. Both with satin finish to add the shy shine of the leather. Red was washed with purple red to pop the details.
Image
Image

Several smaller changes have been applied to the engine bay, too. Some details were painted, decals were added. Additionally I was missing some wiring, so I added a few here and there. Some more will come when the body is in place.
Image

The body has benn primed with 3 coats, now it is drying. When done a wet sending will follow. and then the color.
But only in the next episode... :)

Until then thanx for stopping, keep questioning, and stay tuned! :)

Thank you very much! The most challenging part is still ahead. I plan to apply the first two coats of color to the body. I still can totally mess it up... :-)

Make sure you let the body paint set well before attempting polishing...like a week
Soft paint and polish don't go well together, ask how I know

I use acrylics (in this case Revell Fire red) because of the small room, lack of ventilation. They are much vulnerable, softer than lacquer based ones. Therefore I plan to apply two coats of red, sand smooth, and one, maybe two more coats of red. After a light sanding I'll use Mr. Color Super clear III. This is lacquer based, and stinks like hell. Therefore I have to move all my stuff to the garden to spray 2-3 coats on without dying. Leaving it 2 days for harden, then polish.

So that's the plan. But man purposes, God disposes...

I am "almost" ready with the chassis. Red base, white stripes. But not in the style the kit supports (two wide stripes), but rather what the "supersnake" has: one wide in the middle, two slim one on the sides.

Some cleanup will be needed, especially on the back.

Next up is to paint the details, apply gloss coat, and then the decals. :-)

Thank you, Kev!

Nothing special there on behalf of paints. I used here Revell's Aqua Color 330 Feuer Rot for red and 05 Weiß for the white thinned with Revell's Aqua Color Mix, which is a mix of thinner and retarder.
I'm using .4 needle with approx. 20 PSI.
I like this thinner very much, works well with my Revell, Mr. Hobby and Tamiya paints.

It certainly does very nice finish, if you can get the clear coat that good it will be amazing.

Here you are the result of the first layer of clear :)

The hood might need some polishing after the 3rd coat, but the top looks promising.

Hi there!

This is the first time I used MrHobby's gloss clear, and it is ok. Although it is an acrylic based paint, it dries slowly. About half an hour after the spray job it doesn't stick, can be touched, but really carefully, it is still easy to leave a fingerprint on the surface, and you can't just wipe it off.
I gave a light sanding after 24 hrs of drying time leaving bunch of fine scratches behind. But the varnish hasn't hardened yet, most of these scratches disappeared in an hour. Not really acrylic behavior... :-)
After an other 24 hrs I gave it a light coat just to fill up the the remaining scratches.
Image

I spent a lot of time on the rims. The ones in the kit were visually just too "thick" if you know what I mean. So first I tried to apply a "Diamond Cut" style, and I ended up by removing the chrome paint of on of the rims by mistake. So I decided to paint it full black with thin red stripes.
What shall I say? Not bad, but I'm not 100% satisfied with it, but I can't tell you what's wrong with them. Can you?
Image

Also some details were added to the front...
Image

... and the back.

This is how it looks right now:

And a dryfit test with the front windshield, engine hood and "nose":

Again, thank you for your comments, or just for stopping by! :)

I really like what you've done with the engine, very realistically detailed. Love the painted stripping as well, its always a challenge with that scale.
