Chiefs Revell 1/72 P-38 racer to 1/48 Fishpot conversion

Hi guys
This will be my entry to the shiney things sig. Revells 1982 vintage p-38.



Two sprues of 'silver' plastic. Does this mean I don't have to paint it?!




All raised panel lines... Yey

And a choice of two canopies, standard and recce variant.



Old style Revell instructions. A bit crap but they do the job.



And a surprising amount of decals for a 1/72 ww2 fighter!



Fortunately I won't be using many of them, as I'm aiming at something like this!



I don't have any red bull decals, so this'll be a sort of 'what if' kind of scheme

No, it'd be too much hassle for a couple of 1/72 size red bulls! I'm happy just making something up, lol!

Hi fellas

Progress report on the p-38.

Got the cockpit finished! That's right, I'm not doing any work in there!



An hour or so later.... Main build done! "What a heap of junk!" I wouldn't advise buying this kit (I didn't, it was free!) as you can see, it's full of gaps and poorly fitting parts.




Sanded off the canopy details.



After a quick going over with Ultimate sanders and polisher.



After a quick prime and the first round of sanding, it was time to go to town with the filler!!




Then I got most of that sanded down, so I gave it a coat of alclad primer/filler. Close, but no cigar! I'll let this dry and get back to more filler tomorrow ignore the engine tops, they are yet to be modified

Hi guys, slow progress on this, so here's a quick update.

After some more sanding/filling/sanding ad nauseum, I got a coat of black on.



Still more to do!

Eventually finished, for now anyway. It's as good as it's going to get!



With that done I can have a look at adding some details.

And that's when I lost all interest. Various things going on in life, you know how it is. Haven't touched anything model related since. So, time for a fresh start!

Hi fellas

Quick update on the Fishpot.

Experiment one, I gave one panel a quick buff up to see what effect it would have. I'm using Vallejo metal acrylics on this bit.



Don't know if it shows here, but there's a definite difference in tone on this. Quite pleased with it, should save on some masking time



Tried the same thing with AK xtreme metal enamels. It works, but not to the same extent.



Another thing I tried was mixing two of the Vallejo paints together (I can't remember which!). They didn't like it, lol!



I gave the polishing technique a try on the sidewalls of the fuselage, to try and show the characteristic 'ribbing' shown on Fishpot cockpit sides.



Looks OK to me, but probably achievable with the airbrush as well.

Another thing I've been trying is washi tape from screwfix (a hardware chain in the uk).



A huge (relatively) roll cost me the same as a roll of tamiya tape, granted, it's 25mm wide, but works great for larger areas, and I don't have to worry about wastage at those prices! So far I've not had any paint lift, so it's all good ..... So far, lol!

Hey guys, final update on this

Got the main paint job done. Used a combination of Vallejo metal colour acrylics and AK xtreme metal enamels. Both spray great and look great.... imo of course





After an Alclad Aqua gloss coat, decals went on. You've got to love Cold War Russian jets, about 12 decals total! I'll beat them up a bit later. Also got the undercarriage mounted.



Next up up was the drop tanks and ordnance. To add a little interest I went with a mismatch load out and red drill rounds, which also added some colour.



And there you have it. All done! Hopefully get some reveal pics in the daylight tomorrow.





Oh, forgot to say, I weathered it up a fair bit with sanding sticks!! I basically started rubbing in places with rough to show darker areas, and smooth to get shinier areas. Bit of an experiment, but seemed to work ok!
