Revell 35 Ford 5W

I've been wanting to do a classic hot rod for a wile now and I also want to bring something new to a model show coming up in about a month. So I thought this was a good time. I'm starting with the Revell 32 Ford 5W Coupe, it's a pretty nice kit as all of the Revell 32 Fords are, but the style is a bit off from what I want. The tires are too wide, the engine, brakes and suspension is too new. But it's a good starting point. A couple of the parts are off the sprues and there is a few things missing that I've used for other builds.

















And a couple of resin aftermarket bits I had laying around, I-beam front axle, halibrand quick change rear axle, turned aluminium mufflers and a set of Buick brake drums.



This is pretty much the style I'm going for, not sure about the hood will probably leave the sides off and maybe the top.



Now I just need to find some wheels, tires and an engine that will look good. So time to start digging in the parts boxes.

First thing that needs to be fixed on this kit is the roof. Revell made the kit with the stock roof line, now this is both a good and a bad thing. Bad since most people want to chop the roof on a hot rod so that will take a bit of work or you need to by a chopped resin body. Good since it gives you the option to build it with the stock roof if you happen to be one of those who like the look of it. And also every time Revell has released a kit with a chopped roof they have done a really bad job at it making the car look wrong.

Starting off with the stock body and its high roof. I want to do a 3-3½ scale inch chop which is pretty much "standard" for this type of car.



Now this works out to pretty much exactly 3-3.5 mm as it's a 1/25 scale kit. So I used some Tamiya 3 mm wide tape to mark the cut.



And the cutting begins.



A test fit to see how it will look. Since the roof pillars aren't perfectly vertical they don't line up after the chop.





The b-pillars are pretty much vertical so I cut the roof in front and behind them.



And glued on a 1 mm sheet both in front and behind to make the roof longer.



This way the edges around the windows line up pretty good, there is still a bit of adjusting to do. Like the front window frame don't line up perfectly, but that is easy to just sand flat.



It will need a little bit of filler and sanding to get it seamless but it's not too far off.

This thing is going slower then I want but it's moving along. Have managed to find some wheels and tires that I like. Rear pie crust slicks from the AMT Double Dragster kit and front wheels from Galaxies '48 Chevy Fleetline.



Have also managed to pretty much finish the interior, the floor was painted in black Stynylrez and then flocked. I didn't want a completely black carpet so I mixed in some white flocking with the black.





Then brushed some PVA on the floor and applied the flocking. I did this two times to get a nice even coverage.





The rest of the interior was painted in a dark red brown color, and then gave it a dark brown oil wash.

Managed to finish this a while ago, just haven't updated it. Build the engine using the kit block, resin valve covers, resin intake and resin carbs to get a bit of an old school look compared to the more modern (if you can call late 60-ties modern) look of the kit parts.



The kit rear axle is a Ford 9-in, to keep with the old school look I found a quick change axle. To make it easier to mount I cut off the mounting points from the kit part and added to the new axle.





Had a bit of problem finding a pair of front wheels that I liked. After a lot of searching in most of the part boxes and most of the kits in the stash I finally found a set of nice steel wheels and narrow white wall tires from a Galaxy 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline. As I want too keep the wheels for that kit when I get around to build it I made a silicon mould and cast some resin copies.
