Help me with spare parts for scratch build!

Post by ForTheWatch »

Guys, really so much info out there so please help me to narrow things down a bit.

I am trying to recover an old model. I need spare parts. It is a 1-720 scale model of DKM Deutschland heavy cruiser aka "pocket battleship".

I need to replace masts, gun barrels on the 280mm main guns (they taper) and AA guns. I also would like to add PE rails but only 1-700 available. Here are my questions:

Can I source 1/700 PE parts and barrels - would it look too big on 1/720 scale on this ship? By my calculations the difference in length of this ship would by 74mm and difference in width would be 1mm. No idea how this will scale on the guns but perahaps alright? It is seemingly the easiest way to find PE parts in 1-700.

Or should I buy some styrene parts for the ship - if so can you point me into the direction of a shop that sells cheap styrene tubing or rods for the guns? Any idea on size suggestion for the 15cm and 28cm gun barrels that Deutschland had? 0,04mm and 0.02mm seem to be about right but they would have the thicker portion...

So to sum up, looking for good sources for PE for 1-700 if it is OK to use on the 1-720 ship, good source for styrene parts for masts and barrels (and what size should it be?) and good source for brass masts if possible.

Also, any glue recommendation for PE?

I would go for the 1/700 stuff I could source. For tubing, go here http://www.albionalloys.co.uk/ Or https://www.emodels.co.uk/catalogsearch ... p=2&q=tube

I can also source the same model obviously but where is the fun in that! Thanks for the links, will get a few things there.

I see they have aluminium and brass. Which would you recommend? I suppose aluminium is easy to bend but brass is sturdier. However brass is probably harder to glue?

Speaking of glue, any advise on a good glue for PE?

FYI just ordered a set of barrels in brass in 1/700 scale because... I dunno, they seemed neat. :) Lets hope size is not terribly off.

I'd go for brass for the barrels. I don't have any issues gluing brass or nickle, I use Gorilla Glue (CA) most of the time. However I have just got some Tamiya CA with dispenser ( https://www.scalemates.com/kits/275382- ... quick-type ) for £4.98 off evilbay, the dispenser is great for clumsy fingers & tired eye's!
