Pin wash

I just got some Mig panel line wash to give it a go. I've tried using normal diluted oils for panel line work which has worked OK but thought I would give some specialist stuff a go.

Question I have is-would you do a normal clay wash, like Ultimate stuff and then do a panel line, or just do the panel line? I know you can blend out the panel line wash to make it look 'runny' like you get with a clay wash. Would you do a pre shade with a panel line wash or just do the panel line and fade it with a cotton wool bud or the like? I'm building aircraft by the way.

One more thing, the wash is enamel, do I have to watch out for anything as I use acrylics nearly all of the time unless using Alclad II.

I've used Tamiya's panel liners but only after a gloss coat. Not had any trouble with the aqua gloss and mineral spirits or enamel thinner, but I think though the base color may be acrylic you could run into trouble quickly. Never tried it, though. Maybe I'll run a test later and see what happens.

I recently tried two kits of the same subject, preshading one and not the other, then panel lined them. I have to say the one without preshading looks fine but a little bit flat and toylike. I think the shading lends a bit of scale to the build, but that's my preference so far. If and when I do it again I might be more thoughtful about what parts I preshade or how heavily I do it.

I'll put a coat of aqua gloss on before I pin wash it just to be sure then. Cheers.
