Trumpeter 1/35 JS7

Well here is my first real post on ISM, the model I'v decided on is the Trumpeter Kit number 05586 - 1/35 JS7. I really love the look of this beast. I also purchased two Voyager extras a metal gun barrel and upgrade PE 35749 set. I may also get some metal fruimodel tracks if I don't like the tracks in the kit.

The wife decided it was time for me to do the washing' so I did! Well sort of.
The hull and turret parts have also been washed.



Well got a little bit done today as its raining, all the wheels have been assembled and cleaned. The main components of the suspension done enjoyable build so far. The instruction call for 12 main road wheels to be built' it should read 14.



To maintain a level suspension' I have placed a pencil case on of lower body' while the glue dries' see photo below.



Well progress made, I would like to thank two people who have given me inspiration on this build, the first is Scale-model-Alberta for his three you-tube videos on his build of this kit, I will adopting some of his methods. Also Kyle Nelson, who I found following a web search which took me to his build on tracklinks.com showing extra details of the gun dust cover. I found the same evidence so as you can see by the photo I have added the dust cover attaching mounts. I used a punch and die tool to provide the bolts. It will look better under a coat of paint. But now I'm going to work on the tracks.



Here is the progress so far, I have completed the tracks, and they are permanently in place. I will be painting them on the model "this is a first for me" I'll be using my airbrush and hopefully it will work out fine. The next step for me is to add the rough texture to the turret with lesser texture on the tank upper hull, which is not attached lower hull yet. I think painting the lower hull with the tracks in place will be easier before attaching the tank upper hull because of it's shape.

I bit the bullet and textured the JS7 with Mr Surfacer' 500 on the turret and 1200 on the tanks hull. It came out fine and I'm happy. But when I do it again' I will mask areas were it's not required. I did mask one area and it made life easier. Added a little more texture to the front of the tanks upper hull missed two small areas. Whilst uploading this picture I'v notice that I need to texture the gun housing going to use a motor tool for this. Well on with the build.

Well added the periscopes to the upper hull. To make the painting of them easier I added tamiya curve 2mm tape, which was cut to size on the lens.



I then attached the upper hull to lower hull. Then proceeded to attach other parts to the tank. The two side panels once attached had what I be leave to be a better dividing line for the side opening panels, "to me they looked better"?
Next stage is to add some photo etch which is the part I not keen on.

Thinking off drilling out the JS7 five turret periscopes, after viewing you-tube video showing one from inside of the turret. Well tonight I will decide?

Well' I'v have decided to do it. The drilling will start tonight so I'm praying to the "modelling god" for steady hands. Will post once completed.

Well I have cut out the tanks 5 periscope clear areas which moulded as solid elements on the turret. I'm very pleased as you can see from the picture if you decide to do this take slow and be very carful. The tools I used are in the picture. Now I'm going make the clear elements for each periscope.

All went well with my first periscope I used clear sprue, sanding sticks to shape and polished the optic end. The polishing stick give it that glass look. I think it looks good.

I have now fitted two periscopes in place and have nearly finished number three. Then tomorrow I will do the gunners side of the turret, only have to make the clear parts. Then I'll fit the photo etch periscope frames.

Well it went really well and am happy with the result, I have completed all five periscopes and attached PE securing frame's. It turned out to be easy but time consuming, Will do a final polish and then mask for painting.



Photo etch blues, I'm using as much as I can. I going to try rolling fuel drums and I'm hoping it goes better the the JS7 rear turret bin " I used plastic one in the end but added the two photo etch straps". But the rest of the build is going well.
I have build the kit fuel drums just case I have the photo etch blues again.

Last nights photo etch session trying to roll the fuel drums did't go well. But this morning I watched a you-tube video and saw where I was going wrong' so going to give it another go tonight.

I did role the photo etch rear drums, but I was not happy. So I went with the kit drums and I'm happy, the detail is very good. Here is the progress so far, all turret and hull machine guns need the be added along roof amounted machine gun. Here are the photos.





Well the 130mm gun is in place, I had to add weight to the rear of the turret' it took three washers to balance the turret. The next update will show the completed model with undercoat. I have got further today' in the the final steps I'm adding brass machine guns, to the hull and rear of the turret. Last thing to do in build the roof mounted heavy main gun.



Will complete the build today 31st January, and hopefully have the primer coat laid down. Then it will site under cover for while, so I can start my buddy build of the Tamiya 1/35 scale M1A2 Iraqi Freedoom tank with Switcher. Will post photos of the JS7 before and after primer tomorrow.

Well it's finished in regards to the build, I need to attach the etched grills once I painted the Internal areas black or dark grey. The headlight protective guards are also not permanent, will paint them separately, due a need to attach the headlamp lens.
This trumpeter JS7 will be undercover until I paint it, as I'm doing a buddy build with Switcher. Our build will be Tamiya's M1A2 Iraqi freedom 1/35 kit.





Hi I'm back with my JS7 build' or as I should say painting element. The reason for the delay was I'v been doing a buddy build with switcher and it was fun and enjoyable all the way. I'v primed the JS7 with ultimate black primer which worked like a dream and used my Iwata HP-M2 which is fitted with a 0.4 needle' and is a single action airbrush.



Sorry for the bad quality of this photo, should have taken it at my workbench.

I'v done the base coat using Vallejo 71.017 Russian Green. Followed once dry by 71.017 mixed with yellow ochre 71.033' 60% Green and 40% yellow. This gives a nice colour difference to the tank.






Another stage reached, got some detail painting done. And a coat of satin varnish to seal the model ready for a very light weathering as this vehicle never saw service.




Just a quick update, the dreaded "frosting" has stuck. I mate varnished my JS7 using Vallejo, and I ended up with a white model. So I let it dry over night, and it was still white. So I gave the model another coat of mate varnish! It dryied whiter.
Then I cleaned my airbrush and decided to try just Vallejo thinners on the the model in a heavy wash. And thankfully it did the trick and I got 90% of white removed. The sad thing is' I forgot to take a photo of the model with its frosting on "it was really white" still thinners saved the day.







Well it's finished, a light weathering was applied to the running gear front and rear plates and under the JS7. This is meant to convey a vehcle that has just come of the production line and has had very little use. I let the photos speak for me, and I should have added colour the the small running lights but I'll do that later today if I have time. Still I'm happy with my first project on the forum. Thank you, got a little further today, will post tomorrow. I had a broken turret hatch hinge, but rather than send for a new one, I managed to replace the barrel element with stretched sprue. It was very small but you can't really see the repair.

Very nice Tank indeed . I have a bit of a Tamiya Tool Fetish but on your magnet strip I see something that I haven't seen before. It's the pair of scissors right next to the metal shears, what are they and would you have a tool number by chance??
