I just bought this kit today and I decided to build it together with Jim who promised he will join later

This is hasegawa limited edition model to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war in the pacific. It comes with a gold heavy coin and 2 posters of the yamato






















This is my first model ship build can't wait to start building it once the sig starts

Saw this thing at the local model shop a while back. Umm'd and ahh'd for a while and someone else saved me the trouble of having to have it for myself. Eager to see how it actually builds

I finally got to start on the yamato today after finishing a ferrari beforehand. Not much of work yet but its still some work done

The hull has been a easy build with minor gaps to be seen. The lower deck was then added on with no issues whatsoever




and the next step is the upper decks which is made of 3 parts


Now I need your help should I glue the decks first or should I paint the hull first then the deck?? because I can see it gonna be a nightmare to mask those wooden decks

Some history on the Yamato
Yamato (大和) was the lead ship of the Yamato class of Imperial Japanese Navy World War II battleships. She and her sister ship, Musashi, were the heaviest battleships ever constructed, displacing 72,800 tonnes at full load and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) 45 Caliber Type 94 main guns, which were the largest guns ever mounted on a warship. Neither ship survived the war.

Named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, Yamato was designed to counter the numerically superior battleship fleet of the United States, Japan's main rival in the Pacific. She was laid down in 1937 and formally commissioned a week after the Pearl Harbor attack in late 1941. Throughout 1942, she served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and in June 1942 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the fleet from her bridge during the Battle of Midway, a disastrous defeat for Japan. Musashi took over as the Combined Fleet flagship in early 1943, and Yamato spent the rest of the year, and much of 1944, moving between the major Japanese naval bases of Truk and Kure in response to American threats. Although present at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, she played no part in the battle.

The only time Yamato fired her main guns at enemy surface targets was in October 1944, when she was sent to engage American forces invading the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the verge of success, the Japanese force turned back, believing they were engaging an entire US carrier fleet rather than the light escort carrier group that was all that stood between the battleship and the vulnerable troop transports.

During 1944, the balance of naval power in the Pacific decisively turned against Japan, and by early 1945, its fleet was much depleted and badly hobbled by critical fuel shortages in the home islands. In a desperate attempt to slow the Allied advance, Yamato was dispatched on a one-way mission to Okinawa in April 1945, with orders to beach herself and fight until destroyed protecting the island. The task force was spotted south of Kyushu by US submarines and aircraft, and on 7 April 1945 she was sunk by American carrier-based bombers and torpedo bombers with the loss of most of her crew.

Small update

Tonight I started doing the Yamato's pagoda,funnel, mask and rear tower. All the parts are quite small and it requires a bit time on sanding as the parts are full of flash on hard to reach areas









Here is how it looks like dry fitted on the super structure

Good looking citadel, my eyes would have caught fire or exploded if I had to clean flash off that...

Did some bit more work last night on the yamato

The 3 main guns are now done




The pagoda is now glued to the superstructure and I glue on the small bits around it




The funnel is just a jig to check the fitting of the bridge around it. I'll paint the black top first before attaching it permanently




I then glued the decks onto the hull. I didnt glue the last piece yet as I need to paint the hard to reach area in the bottom of it
The 3 piece deck is not bad but I need to do some tiny filling




With that done I just cant resist putting the parts up to see how this beast looks like

Some small progress on the Yamato

I've painted the funnel top flat black and I'll masked it up


Then is to paint up the hard to reach areas after priming. I used Tamiya XF-66 light grey



Once it was dry then I can finally close up and the hull is completed next up is to prime it again

I fit in the guns last night and built up the remaining aa guns that need separate painting







back to the hull
The rudder and steering is now added


so today I gave it a black primer and boy it took a lot of primer

Hi

So the lower hull and the wooden deck has been painted. The paint used are tamiya ts-33 dull red and tamiya xf-57 buff




Leaving to dry the painful masking the wooden deck starts. I took 4-5 hours to reach to this stage..... Used up 2 masking tapes in the process



All was left was to assemble and glue the remaining aa guns and the poles for the flag. I left out some mg guns which on the wooden which will painted separately

Hi

So the hull paint job is now done. The guns and the towers are also done painted









After the paint has dried here is how the yamato looks like with all its colours it really looks stunning


Then I gave it a dark wash to pop the details out





and once the washes dry up
The pagoda is now glued to the hull


As for the back deck I painted up the detail areas with tamiya xf-64


All the MG's are glued onto the deck and the main guns are painted and placed onto its position


The propellers of the ship are glued into place


The emperor's crest is also painted and glued sorry bout the blurr image my camera wont focus


So today is to finish the small bits like the floatplanes , base and escape boats




So the build is almost done the next update would be the last I guess. So..... thanks for taking a peep at my build guys

So the final stages of the Yamato is done

floatplanes decalled and washed and so as the escape boats








and the ships only markings are on too

and its done!! The finished ship is in the reveal section thank you for having a look although its most of the time is me talking to myself lol
