Tamiya 1:48 MIG-15

Post by RoscoRSA »

Hey guys,

I finally have an excuse to get stuck into building this kit. I got it as a partner to the Academy 1:48 F-86 (that I started before I knew about this GB, sadly).

But without further ado, here is the obligatory box/sprue shots :thumb1:

I plan on building this one with the tail separated on the dolly showing the engine in all its glory. I have to admit there is allot less plastic to this kit considering the potential it has.

This coulf be intresting
I have been looking at this kit with the same idea (to put next to a Sabre)
But as i recently build a whole bunch of MiG15's i decided i would use some other kits to build
But if this turns out to be a nice kit i may end up buying one after all
Have fun building

I've been looking for a 1/48 Mig 15 for ages and have passed over this kit because I thought it was clear. Do you get the option of building it as a normal kit? Looks like it looking at the sprues.

By the way what was the Academy F86 like? I have it in the stash.

With the Mig you have the 'option' to do a full clear build ( not for me btw ) or a normal build, you get sprues for both. i am pretty sure that in some way Tamiya intends that you build it in a combination of painted and clear sections. But we shall see how I am going to do it.

As for the Academy model, I have it with the Cartograf decals so as an Academy kit it should be very good, I am about 50% done building it and so far it fits like a dream, I have had no need for filling at all.

Update #1

So this past weekend I managed to get quite a bit done on this model. So far it has been pretty smooth sailing fitting everything together, there have been a few times when I had to exercise some patience when gluing thing together but the upside is I do not need to fill any seems.

But without further ado, here is what I have been up to:

Started with the Cockpit tub
Image

Finished the painting
Image

Ready for fuselage assembly assembliy
Image
I have to note, Tamiya did include weights for the front end, and one of the weights does not fit snugly, so it rattles, not a problem per say but still not ideal.
Image

And here is my first (and so far only) fit issue
Image

Built the drop pods
Image

Prepped the miscellaneous items for interior painting
Image

Prepping the body for primer and base coat
Image

Primer went on, I then did something for the first time, I sanded down the primer so smooth it out before I apply the black base coat.
Image
I have to admit, the smoothness of the finish is totally worth the extra effort involved.

On a side note, I used Tamiya's 1000grit (or was it 2000grit can't remember) foam sanding sheets.

**Bonus money shot of the migs companion**
Image

The next day I proceeded to get the first coat on. For the Mig I used Revel Aluminium (99 I think), this stuff sprays sooooo much better and easier than any Taniya Matallic I have ever tried.
Image

**Another bonus money shot for the F-86, painted in Tamiya Chrome silver**
Image

Thats it for now, should get some more done on Wednesday :cheers2:

:ooops:

This weekend is my first free weekend AND its a long weekend, so I may finally be able to get the last of the main painting done and perhaps get some decalling done to.

These last couple of weeks.......

# Update 2

I managed to get this thing very close to done over the past weekend, I should finish the final touches and reveal this weekend. so without further ado, please enjoy :thumb2:

I started with prepping the additional panels and body for a different shade of aluminium
Image
Image
Image
I didn't do as much as I honestly should have done but the time required to do it properly was just going to put this kit out of the "complete it in time category" although the F-86 that I am building sort of in tandem is being shelved for a while, i want to do that one justice.

I did some work on the engine
Image

I them proceeded to mask of the various bays for the interior color
Image
Image
Image
I did not do the front wheel well because I just did not have the patience to try and mast of that area, that is fiddly as hell :violin: although as a consolation you wont really see it when everything is done.

Done
Image
Image
they came out pretty well considering this is the first time I ever painted these areas at this stage en not earlier in the build.

I did the red on the nose, did a while base coat and then the gloss red. This came out VERY nice...... at first.......
Image
Yeah, i know, cryptic. But I left it to cure for 2 days before handling the paint and at first I thought it was good to go but it being winter here does not help so even after 2 days of curing I left fingerprints in the paint, right in the leading edge. :bash: I managed to rub the prints sortof smooth, at least enough not to be noticed by anyone but me. I am not amused.....

Here is the majority of the components done
Image

Some detail painting
Image

The engine is assembled ready for detail painting and weathering
Image

A quick assembly to see what it looks like
Image

And with the engine installed
Image

At this point I have managed to do some decal-ling, on a side note the tail section does not fit on the stand with the air-brakes extended, :bash: should have known, so I assembled the clear version and painted it up, does not look entirely the same but it will never be fitted to the body so it shouldn't be a problem.

This weekend I will do a final assembly and do the reveal photos, and call it done. I might pick it up to do more weathering, especially on the engine once I start on the F-86 again, but for now I will have gotten this one done enough for this SiG :ooops:
