Schulze's Tiger 1 Fehrmann F05

Post by RichardT »

Hi,
here is my Tiger 1 hybrid. These Tiger 1's were a MIX of old and new parts. Some had been used as training tanks and others were vehicles that had
been damaged and brought back from the front. Most had old hull's and turrets to which the later steel wheels were added. Some had zimmerit
mostly worn on the hull or turret or both but some had none. Nearly all had the late tracks with the ice cleats. Most had tools missing. There are no
known photographs of F05 so there is a lot more artistic licence when modelling this Tiger.Accounts state that F05 knocked out at least 3 Shermans
in fierce fights with the Allies before escaping, running out of fuel and being scuttled by its crew.
My model shows FO5 out of fuel with some of the crew inside prepping the tank for demolition.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Great work and a great looking Tiger. That damaged zimmerit looks awesome.
Did you use the RFM Tiger Gruppe Fehrmann for this build?

thanks mate.
no this was a hack/slash build using some of the spares from my tamiya and dragon kits.
the lower hull was tamiya, the rear plate was dragon, the front plate was tamiya, the wheels were from a tamiya old sturmtiger kit,the tracks were dragon DS,the turret was tamiya, the gun barrel was dragon plastic, the cupola was dragon, the loaders hatch was tamiya, the tools were all dragon, but the tow cables were tamiya plastic.there is a full verlinden interior inc turret with engine using spares although i had to scratch build some parts. The decals were from the Rye Field Fehrmann kit.I wanted to use as little aftermaket as possible and just see what my spares could knock up.I used DAS modelling clay for the zimmerit really thinned out using water as a lubricant so it is wafer thin but it is slightly too thick in places.

i forgot to seal the model with flat varnish, strangely it produced more of a satin finish and some of the detail popped out.I thought this would not happen with matt varnish.ImageImageImageImageImage

i am particularly happy with my first attempt at a rocky outcrop using the leopard spot method.!!Image

ps if anyone knows why matt varnish looks satin i would be very grateful if you could let me know.

Cheers,
Richard

Wow Richard, that really was a big fusion of parts from different companies, tnx for explaining all of that to me. You just gotta love what one can do with spare parts. Great build once again.
I am using AK's Matt varnish and it has given me good results. Not 100% matt, but I like if just a little shine is visible, so I like the way yours turned out.

Cheers Ron,
I saw a video by Mig Jimenez where he explained the paints used were satin and not matt ,but the tanks took on a matt appearance
because of the dust, mud and dirt.I used a lot of white spirit to really deteriorate the paint finish in order to try and achieve a really old
faded look - i wonder if that corrupted the matt varnish.I did use a new paint brush and jar of humbrol matt. However the overall look
is not a disaster - if anything i could say there had just been a short April 45 rain shower !!!! LOL - or i might add a little pigment

Cheers,
Richard
