Hello

Post by Nevillez »

Afternoon, people of a Scale Modelling persuasion.

Have finally bit the bullet and signed up to this forum as a 'returning hobbyist'.

Having ambled/stumbled through my twenties in a drunken haze and settled in my thirties with wife and baby in tow, I recently decided to revisit a this fine hobby which I frequently enjoyed in my teens.

Having watched Paul's Airfix 109 build series I couldn't help but think that this time around, instead of slapping the models together in a day like I used to, I'd take my time, and more importantly, now I have a little disposable income, invest in some proper tools.

I have invested in all sorts of previously frowned upon 'time wasting' items like filler, extra thin glue, sprue cutters ( I was a twist and pull guy back in the day)Micro Sol etc etc and also bought a cheapy Chinese airbrush and Violamart compressor set from Amazon.

I am ashamed to admit that I previously had not used any paints other than Humbrol enamels, aside from the odd Revell enamel I got as part of a gift set. I am now over this impatience and loyalty to an inferior brand (aided by the ease of the internet to get what you need).

I've recently finished a 1/48 airfix Harrier GR3, which was an experimental model to allow me to get used to the new techniques I'd seen, but never tried. End result, clearly by some distance the best model I'd ever build, but some way short of the standard of other's I'd seen built on you tube, not that I could expect to be at that level so soon after restarting.

I've now moved on to a new project, an Airfix Vulcan, received as a gift some years ago but never started. I've read this kit is a beast to get right with large fit issues around the wings and I can see there is an unbelievable amount of flash on most of the parts.

Any tips from anyone who has built this before would be most welcome. I've only just started on step one so I've got all the fun fit issues to go through in time.

Also, if anyone has any tips on using Vallejo Model Colour through an airbrush I would appreciate that too. Love their colour range and value, but have seen people on the internet get good results with these, wheras mine just clogged the AB or was too thin and would not adhere to the primer. I thinned with Ultimate thinner and tried spraying at different PSI settings. I'm a paint mixing novice if I'm honest, but had no issues with Gunze or Tamiya using Ultimate thinners though.

I'll sign off with what I see a lot of you guys doing

Chris

:welcome: Hello, and welcome to the forums! Also, welcome back to the hobby. You might want to head over to the "Reference Section" under the "Paints, Varnishes & Thinners" sub-section and have a read through the questions and comments there. If you do not find an answer to your Vallejo question there, post one and I am sure the community members will be able to help!

Your story sounds identical to mine! Pleased to say the forum is full of information on techniques I previously dismissed as unnecessary and time-consuming. :cheers2:
