What I saw in Cairns Naval Base

Post by PhildaFish »

I saw all sorts of ships in port but only managed to get a few photos of some of them. I haven't done any Naval builds yet and although my granddad spent many years afloat in one vessel or another before, during and after WWII I know very little about Naval matters. I saw but didn't manage to get photos of USS Germantown and USS Blue Ridge which was a shame. Here's a couple of the better shots and there are more on my website HERE

Great Photo's thanks for posting them :th:

Was there a lot of naval activity as I know the Aussies are building up there forces due to China's naval expansion?

No problem, happy to share - in fact I was steering the boat and my wife was taking the photos and I rarely let anyone touch my camera so I was thinking "I hope these come out well enough to share with all the guys on ISM!"

There was a lot of activity... Or it seemed like the was a lot of activity for someone who doesn't live there and doesn't know what it's usually like... I don't remember seeing anything there 2 years ago when I was there... I hadn't returned to the hobby 2 years ago so I wouldn't have paid that much attention back then though... Think I'd better make a decision here for fear I might sound as if I'm dithering... Or mad...

Yes, DC, it seemed very busy to me!

A quick list of all the Naval vessels I saw in port (didn't get photos of them all though, especially after initially thinking one was a museum and trying to get on board! Whoops! I was escorted away and thought it was better not to try and take pictures after that.)

HMAS Warramunga
HMAS Sydney
HMAS Waller
USS Blue Ridge
HMAS Broome
HMAS Mermaid
HMAS Tarakan
HMAS Leeuwin
HMNZS Canterbury

Apparently USS Germantown was around as well but I missed it.
