Finished this around the end of june, just before i started the phantom.
I really did enjoy building this, no issues with fit.

A fair amount of work and all that stunning detail and very little of it is seen after it's in place

It is a good looking engine

A black wash does wonders on car parts too

makes them more realistic and less toylike
this MIG wash I love

I like the F-40 engine scott, i like the various colours . I've never really liked the washes on the engines, i dont know why. On some of the GP bikes i've done i've airbrushed smoke to highlight the crankcase webbing a touch but that's about it.
I know what you mean about the 'toy' look though. If you could see much of it even when the engine cover was displayed open i would do something. It can come back out again without to much hassle. I could do one side for a direct comparison.

I have the Enzo too, but i have the scale motorsport PE set and interior carbon decals for that kit. That will be a serious attempt for me even if it takes a couple of years !

the only part of the porche that i wasnt happy with is the brake calipers. Tamiya has molded the inside half to the upright which means you have to paint and install the disc before gluing the outside half of the caliper in place so as it sits just now you can see the seam. I'm kind of hoping i've just had a 'blonde' moment and missed something obvious and somone can suggest a solution (without cutting the caliper off the upright)

Ya, IF I ever get it finished most of that detail is DEEP in the engine bay...that's why I brag about it now with photos!!

Scott, you have to finish this, it's a crime not to !
Just like building your dream home - every day at work for me is one less till it's complete and the shoulders go down, a big sigh and a huge sense of satisfaction runs through you !
It's a similar thing with the modeling, is if i do something to it every day, no matter how small, eventually it will be done. I've done this a couple of times and it's done before you know it !

When i got to this stage i wished i had gone the carbon look but when the seats and dash are in you see very little of it.

Thanks scott. Do you see what i mean with the calipers ? The gap between the disc and caliper is too small to mask the disc so the only thing i could think of (apart from what i did) was a peice of thin sheet styrene between the caliper half's to allow me to mask the disk, or just paint the caliper by hand.

Why did tamiya have to mold the caliper to the upright ! With a kit like this you should be able to assemble the caliper, fill and sand the seem perfect, prime and paint before going anywhere near the model !

Not really because you have done such a fabulous job painting them, they look totally natural to me

I only see the great end result, you have to do the battle to get it there

The instruction's called for gloss red for the shocker's but i went for silver with clear red over the top to try and give the anadised look. Donk know if i achieved that but i think it looks better than jus red.

It took about a week to paint the interior, dont know why as it's only three colours. I did try to highlight the stitching on the seats but gave up .

Your shock effect looks good as does the Porsche chocolate interior
Some great progress happening
I want to do a Tamiya clear blue over silver for a car body one day....seen a Ferrari like that will see if I can find the pic

Thank you AT, the interior has come out well, the detail on this is amazing !

Scott, i've never thought about that for a body colour but that would be stunning if possible ?
I dont have an F-40 but i do have something close ! Another kit my daughter has been at. She's assembled quite a bit of the engine and front suspension without paint obviously so this kit would be ideal for an 'out there' paint job. Nice one scott

Naw, it is ok, go for it. I tested clear blue and clear orange over a silver base and they both looked fantastic!
For the red moulded F50 I would do a white Tamiya primer, Tamiya silver and then the clear colour...with LOTS of drying time I between coats.

Now I am testing my painting talents on something far more highbrow....converting a white dryer vent into a black dryer vent.
I should start a thread on it

it was being primed while i was waiting for the pics to up-load. Great minds think alike and all that ! I dont have an airbrush with a large enough nozzle to paint a car body, mine are all for detail stuff. I use the tamiya TS sprays for anything big'ish'. I have a can of TS- 30 for the silver on standby

What do you guys use to paint the large area's ? I'm quite happy spending money on tools especialy airbrushes but i'm not looking to be bankrupt either, i'm assuming iwata will be most people's first choice ?

Firstly I have a video for you to watch, that you may or may not have seen. Dr. Paul Budzic is a great modeller and talks about spray patterns. These are great videos to watch, sorry not linking it here to u tube as it is screwy

He has a great series of videos, especially the ones on airbrushing

Then this was a great thread on ISM about those large airbrushes and where to get them in expensively

Things are gonna get interesting for me as the house gets finished as I have a huge list of tools and toys I want to outfit both my workshop and model space. A large spray pattern airbrush is on my list for sure. Winning a lottery might help too

This last pic isn't to clear . The bonnet uses pre-bent metal hinges and looking at the geometery in the instructions, i just couldnt see it being able to be opened and closed still retaining the perfect gap, but it did. I used a spot of damper grease in the struts to keep it from closing under it's own weight.

Scott, that is definately happening but i'll need to talk to you about it nearer the time. The one i was looking at is 550 uk pounds and at that money i need to make sure i buy the right one.

I trawled the web for anadised ends for the braided hose but couldnt find anything suitable. I just cut thin strips of ali foil tape to stop the ends from fraying and a quick spray of clear red and blue.

7 coats of paint on each panel. I bought the set of tamiya polishing compounds and the Ultimate buffers but i'm terrified to go near it ! I can feel a pack of plastic spoons coming on

I still have the porche badges for the bonnet and steering wheel. I'm looking forward to doing the Enzo now i've finally decided on a colour, i wanted something different from the usuall red, yellow or black so i've settled on pearl white with possibly shelby stripes and red calipers. In my head it looks good but we'll see
