Cleaning Models After They Are Built

Hey Gents!

After your model is complete and you put it on your shelf, what do you do to clean it? After a while it starts to collect dust and all I ever do is use a very soft, large paint brush to dust my models. It seems to do OK but I wonder if I should be doing more to protect my models. I am considering glass cases but that will be sometime in the future.

What do you do the clean and protect your completed models?

Tamiya makes a dusting brush, and you can use your airbrush to push air across the model.

raid the make up counter, and get a soft blusher brush....

I think Forbes is right; best way to keep clean is probably a cabinet with a door. The Ikea Detolf is a good one, not too pricey. You can also get clear glass doors for the Billy Book case, which is my plan shortly, just need to make time to drive to the Ikea. Dust with a soft brush or compressor as needed!

There's vids out there too about weather-stripping the Detolf to keep dust out.

The only reason I've held off grabbing some is I wish they had the same thing but maybe double-wide. I have some 12"+ stuff coming down the pike...

The Tamiya Cleaning Brush is an excellent option, so is the airbrush I have both and use them. But back in the day before I had them I used a Blush Application Brush from the local Chemist or Beauty Shop to use as my model duster. After I started using photo etch that got replaced by the airdusters you find in Computer Stores for use on keyboards.

I think that any mechanic cleaning process brings the danger of breaking off some thin parts, so i avoid cleaning the models at all costs. When i have to do that i use my airbrush and just blow away the dust carefully.

I used to use a large artists brush but the airbrush idea trumps all others as you don't touch the model.

I also tried my leaf blower from the garden shed but found I was losing too many kits during the cleaning process - LOL.

I have those IKEA display cases but due to its construction... some dust gets in there over time....

just be careful not to damage anything.... !

It takes about 2 or 3 times longer until stuff gets terribly dusty in a cabinet compared to a shelf. It is better than nothing though

Definitely ! I agree Michael !... I have to look for something that will store my BAC TSR2 in 1/48 almost 3 feet long ....LOL
but until I find the right one... she is collecting dust.. so that Tamiya brush will come in handy ... the duster to but that just migrates the dust LOL...

Those gaps in construction of the case can be overcome. Glue ( glass silicone ) a thin clear perspex strip down the inside edge of the case where the door closes then add a strip of weather seal to that. It is about the most less ugly way of fixing the dust problem.

Not too sure what the prices were like, but I managed to to get one of those glass cabinets from Ikea at the weekend for £40....I may and go and get another very soon, I thought they were in the region of around £90 at one time...

There is two versions.....look the same , but have different load ratings for the shelves. From memory they are 3.5kg and 6kg
Usually here sell for 99 and 140 aud
