AK shakers.

Post by Augustus »

Was thinking of getting some of these to add to paint bottles and have noticed something on the packaging.
The 120 pack AK-678 are Steel Shakers, and the 250 pack AK-892 are Stainless Steel Shakers.
Any difference? My only worry is rust but surely a modelling accessory company wouldn't sell balls prone to corrosion would they?

Have just noticed this from their 'Stainless' ones:

"Stainless steel balls to use with all kind of modelling products even the more aggressive products, also with enamel paints, primers, and acrylics....."

The others don't say the aggressive bit.

Check you local arts and crafts stores for glass beads. They will do the same job, cost you less (it's normally a few USD for 30+, depending on size) and won't react with anything we use in modelling.

Lol, these AK-I ones work out USD $3.70 for 120, or USD $7.45 for 250.

My missus found 4 glass beads, 6mm with a hole through the middle:

Image

I popped one into a bottle of Vallejo MC black. Gave it a shake, nothing. Gave it another good shake, could hear it for a bit then nothing. These don't seem to work very well, i don't think they are heavy enough.

Me old Dutch now has 3 glass beads, 6mm with a hole through the middle.

I thought about these but decided to look for an alternative, to my mind a ball of any material has the potential to block the neck of these Vallejo paint bottles.
If you shop around you will find stainless steel nuts in better quantities for less money, because of their irregular shape they cant block the nozzle ...
What do you hear ? Nothing but the rain

The ones from AMMO of mig are stainless, I have some in my model color. Note that model color is thick enough around the bottle that it will be hard to hear it moving around even the heavy ones. It is still working just fine. The key is to turn the bottle upside down and touch it real fast to a paper towel to draw out the thin bubbles that form at the top. After that perfect paint.

ha ha......yeah I don't think so guys....

When using the shakers it is best to use marine grade in the acrylic other wise after they have been reused a few times and over the course of a year or so it will rust causing said paint to be be chucked...

You can find some really nasty images by googling bear attack victim (be warned they can be graphic, "bear" is also a gay porn term, and those can be graphic too).
Never been through or seen an actual bear attack myself, but those who would know say the one in The Revenant is pretty much how they happen. I took a short term job way up in the Arctic circle years ago, a polar bear took an unhealthy interest in my group and started closing in. A bear banger (a 12 gauge round that screams out of the barrel they explodes about 150 yards away, it's a glorified firework that ends like a BIG firecracker) didn't scare him off at 100 yards. At 50 yards a marine signal flare changed his mind well it went over his head. If that hadn't worked then and there, the shotgun had 4 rounds of 1-ounce slugs (a slug is just a BIG bullet, compared to the normal, loose pellets (shot) that the gun gets it's name from) that were going to be fired at his (her?) chest rapid fire. The polar bears are really cute, even when big, until they are covered in blood, and it's rarely their own (normally from a seal, thankfully), then they look quite fiendish. The only deadly creatures in Canada are bears, wolves, cougars (also known as mountain lions in the US), wolverines are ghosts, people just don't get near enough to worry about them, and in the event of a car collision moose, deer and caribou can be fatal. It's nice that everything dangerous is of a size that makes them (relatively) easy to spot and shoot, unlike all the deadly creepy crawlies hiding down under.
You have to define "lake system", we have the west coast lakes, the Red River lake system (the only major river in the world that runs south to north), and of course the great lake system.

The western lakes heading down into USA or it might be the great lakes.

Yes a bear closing in would get your water running, a crocodile and sharks have you before you have a chance to think about it.

At first I was going to use some steel BBs (Daisy) but first tested it on a bottle of paint I didn't mind ruining - it only took about 2 months before they started rusting.
Beads - Daisy.JPG
So next I saw at the store these Airsoft BBs - 2,000 for about $5.95 - a life time supply even if I use 3 per bottle. No metal to them and they have a little bit of weight (not as much as the steel BBs of course) but enough to move around in the paint to mix it well.

That's steel, not stainless steel which I believe still rusts, just takes longer.

I don't believe so, but I maybe wrong. Lead goes greyish white . I don't think it leaves the surface ??
