Foolish Mistake on Pre-Shading and Priming

I am currently in the middle of my first build in a number of years, an Airfix Messerschmitt BF109 1:48

In my excitement I have put the primer on my model before adding the pre-shading, how would you guys suggest fixing this? I was thinking just to add the pre-shading now over the primer, or would it be better just to remove the primer and start again (if that's even possible)?

I have been much more patient with this model than I ever have before, but I do find it is quite easy to get ahead of myself, especially when coming up to a bit I have been looking forward to!

Not a problem at all, normally you would put the preshading over the primer. Otherwise the primer coat would cover the preshading.

I'm currently at the stage of having my build primed and keep delaying the preshade as it will be my first attempt and it scares me. Amazing the different jobs I'm finding to do instead. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out - it is a nice model to build.

Its a good subject to work on. Nice clear lines on the wings and the ringed fuselage aft of the cockpit.

Don't worry if it looks awful when you do the pre-shade. The great thing about this technique is how forgiving it is. Once you start adding the base coat you'll be amazed at the effect you get as the shade begins to disappear.

EDIT - the 109 was the first kit I ever pre-shaded so I know from experience how the shading clears up!

I built this kit a few weeks ago & bottled out of pre-shading, I used a Ultimate wash instead

I've just gone for it today, looks okay from what I can tell but we'll have to see what it looks like at the end

TBH I have accepted the first number of models are going to be experimental why so get used to techniques and aren't going to look perfect

Exactly right. As long as its fun / a challenge, and you feel like you're moving forward then its all good. I'm 18 months into my return to the hobby and there's new stuff to try on nearly every build - especially if you vary your subjects.

Well, another lesson today - leave more time for the primer to dry! After pre-shading I started to mask ready to paint, but pulled some of the primer up while doing it, silly mistake

The problem is that I get limited time to work at it with my daughter, and won't get any time during the week, so when she does go down for the night or for a nap I probably try to take too much advantage of the spare time; I'm being more patient in terms of painting and actually doing stuff, its the waiting that gets me!

I'm thinking it may actually be worth having two models on the go at once for when I get itchy fingers while waiting for something to dry We'll see with the next one(s)
