Harder & Steenbeck to Badger

Question Guys,
I am currently using a Badger airbrush that is connected by Quick release to a Badger hose.
I am considering getting a new Harder & Steenbeck airbrush and would like to be able to still use the badger hose.
Is there a Quick release fitting that will screw on to the H&S and plug into the Badger Q/R female fitting?

you may want a adapter to screw onto the AB hose and your quick release onto that.
You have to know your sizing.

All H&S airbrush come with the quick connect nipple. So it will work with any quick release hose

Great for detail work. The brush doesn't deliver enough air for large model surfaces though.Takes forever and hard to maintain a wet edge.

it isn't that bad it is usable for bigger surfaces, you just have to work a little harder.

It sounds to me as if you're looking for an all-round workhorse. Without knowing much more, I will draw upon my own experience with different brands and my resulting preferences. This doesn't mean my advice is correct for you. Caveat emptor.

I would assume in your price range that an Iwata Eclipse CS (HP-CS) would fit the bill. It is an extraordinary airbrush for the price. You could certainly look through eBay and possibly score a used one for less. In the category you would find the H&S Evolution and the Badger 105 Patriot. Both are great quality tools. The parts availability is potentially an issue, especially if you make it a habit to dent needles or seals. My personal opinion though is that once you've established a relationship with a reputable Japanese eBay vendor, that parts supply is just as good and affordable as the H&S or Badger. But it'll depend on your preference.

I won't go into needle size comparisons at this point, because the needle and nozzle size from one manufacturer is completely different to another. Not just in measurement, but in performance. The Badger 105 that I own has a 0.76mm needle and nozzle with a slight taper, whereas the H&S Infinity has the equivalent in a 0.4mm needle and nozzle with no taper. The geometry of the combination of needle and nozzle multiplied by the amount of air (volume, not pressure) delivered will determine your ultimate spray pattern and atomization.

If I were asked to rank the airbrushes mentioned, I would do so accordingly:

1. Iwata Eclipse CS -- great tactile tool with ample ability to scribble thin lines as well as cover larger areas. Being a pen style airbrush, this has one of the larger heads in it's class, which means that the air cap produces a greater airflow leading to better atomization of the material that passes over the needle. This reduces tip dry and deposits material smoothly. The HP-CS comes with the 0.35mm opening on the nozzle, but the optional kit for a 0.5mm is available. The HP-BCS which is the siphon feed version of the airbrush ships with the larger nozzle opening. PFTE seals throughout.

2. Badger 105 Patriot -- fine workmanship and a solid tool. Even though many people might think that the 0.76mm needle sounds scary, it really is an all-round workhorse and you can write your name with it on a penny if you need to. The major benefit with this airbrush is the fact that the needle seal has a lifetime warranty. Everything is made well and parts are as easy to source as checking with Coast Airbrush. The Badger customer support is second to none. They're almost slavish about making sure that they carry parts for even borderline ancient products. All in all, a great tool that you can't go wrong with. Atomization is almost as good as the HP-CS from Iwata, but you can get a larger spray pattern than with the HP-CS. Don't assume however that this is necessarily a good thing. The overspray factor with the Patriot is higher than the HP-CS, most likely due to the head design. Producing a larger spread of material requires more air. The Patriot has PFTE seals.

3. H&S Evolution -- I've had two of these, but recently got rid of them. Not because they were inferior in any way, but rather because I didn't use them for a couple years. I now have a H&S Colani and an H&S Infinity, but I'm only mentioning that so it would be clear that I'm not brand-partial to Iwata or Badger. The Evolution is available in a CR plus version (which is chromed, as opposed to nickel plated) as well as a 2-in-1 bundle, where you get two paint cups and two different nozzle sizes. The Evolution is a great tool if you have a small compressor which doesn't produce much air or if you use a can. The head design is tiny by comparison to the HP-CS, so not much comes out. This in turn leads to paint that you have to thin down so much that you risk having blotches sprayed all over. The popular 0.2mm nozzle seems to be what many H&S users prefer. It will atomize water and anything at that viscosity very well. But it doesn't transfer material very well. Changing to the larger nozzle such as the 0.4mm doesn't help much either. While it will let out more material due to a larger orifice, the air supply is the same. This results in poorer atomization than the above two. Another unfortunate side effect is that this particular combination suffers more from tip dry. My feeling of the Evolution and by transitive property the Infinity is that they're artists' airbrushes and are designed to spray inks and dyes onto paper or some such absorbent target. The early versions of the Evolution had perishable seals, but later versions are fitted with PFTE versions. The Evolution also has an optional triple setting for seals for the needle. I have yet to discover that this is necessary, but don't take my word for it.

You shouldn't take my word for it though, read up and make up your own mind. Reviews are great, but all too often anything that is reviewed is met with praise. Enough to make it difficult to tell a loom from a lemon. Ideally, if you have a friend or even an airbrush supplier that will let you try their products, that'd be a good way of making sure you're getting a good deal. Some dealers will also allow you to try it out and take a return if you don't like it.

I have many airbrushes from different brands and manufacture. I frequently use them and most all of them will spray paint reasonably well. But I find myself many times reaching for a larger airbrush to lay down a well atomized layer of more viscous material. But with a well purposed and properly cared for all-round workhorse you can make it with that airbrush for a long time.
