New Project - SDKFZ 247 A

So, I have seen some work on conversions builds of the 247 A and B and really like the look of them. They are rare and unique and show the progression of Armored Cars in the German war machine. They were way ahead of their time and to think that it would be 50 years or so until you would see true 8 Rads in the US Military, the LAV.

That being said I have been researching what is out there and I have come to the conclusion that what everyone is making and the kits available are inaccurate. I don't say this to piss anyone off, just to state a fact. The two glaring issue I have are the interior and the rear doors.

I have found on the net a good pic of the rear and the interior and they BOTH show that the back doors went all the way to the top, so when the doors were open there was no cross bar at the top. The other this in the side doors, they were two sections. The top on was a rectangle that opened on two hinges and swung back and the bottom on swung down on two hinges. Most models do not show the hinges correctly or show the door as one piece.

The other think is the Periscope mount, the pic I found shows in dead center of the cabin, and I can confirm this in another pic that shows the scope in the center of the cab. Most models have it attached on the right wall of the cab.

Also, there is only one "divider" towards the front and it is lower and slanted. Take a look at the pics and tell me if you agree with me or not. I want to try and make some lists of parts from two to three kits and some drawings to show how to cut the plastic sheets to make the cabin so that others can make this kit easier. I will start with the A and then work on the B.

Kits I am thinking about right now to use to get all the parts are as follows.

Tamiya Krupp Protze 1 Ton Towing Truck w/3.7cm Pak
Tamiya Sd.Kfz 222
Tamiya Schwerer 8 Rad Sd Kfz 232

Between these kits I am sure we can find the chassis, wheels, and most of the armored vision slits and side and fender stowage. Running lights and other greeblies

Then a sheet a polystyrene to make the armor and off we go.

So here is the photos that show most of what I am talking about. I have about a dozen photos of the 247 I have looked at and I think we can, as a group make a much more accurate model of the 247 A.

Back doors go all the way up! Not rounded at the top.



Very good shot of the inside. The front divider is 'bent' not just straight across and the side doors have two handles, one the top and one for the bottom. There is a reinforcing rib towards the back and a couch! Again, on the rear you can clearly see the doors go all the way to the top and you can see the seam where the doors meet in the center.



Here is a pic showing the top side door open. Also, look at the steering wheel through the open front window. It is just like the Krupp, a normal config, not pointing down like other armored cars. You can also see the camo pattern used on this pic.

The image below reinforces my belief that the rear doors go all the way up. Great pic showing a lot of interior details too.

Sovereign 2000 #S2KV007 Sdkfz 247 is the Ausf B and I am doing an Ausf A to start.

The kit has inaccuracies and at that price I would expect it to be correct, so nope, not going to buy that.

As I stated in my first post on this, what is out there that everyone has been using is incorrect. I want to make as accurate as possible a 1.35 SdKfz 247 Ausf A.

I have started the under carriage using the Krupp kit, using as much of the kit as possible as that is what the Germans did. I will now start to cut the polystyrene to make the armor plates. I will modify them as needed to make the vehicle match the historical pictures.

The only problem I have is that I am also knee deep in my Tiger 131 project and this is a distraction from that. I will try to work on both and not get bogged down.

Didn't know that or that it was as bad as that. I thought you were mainly concerned with the doors.

I have been working on a Template to cut the armor plates. Here is my Rev. 1.



And here is a quick throw together to test fit. I was off a bit on a couple angles and the rear is a mess but I am getting there. My hope is to be able to post a Template that anyone can print and then cut their own plates with.







And here it is just sitting on the Krupp frame. I think I at least have the scale correct.



When I have all the angles correct I will post the Template as a JPEG.

I will also be posting my version of a tutorial on how to build up this kit, I hope it helps anyone who follows me down this dark path
