Italeri 1/24 DAF 95 Space cab

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
This will be the buildthread for my DAF 95 build
For me this is a bit of a trip down memory lane
When i was a kid my dad tried modelling as a hobby
Allthough it wasn't something for him he did build a few and then he stopped
One of the reason was little me running around the house
But he had this kit aswell (and a 4th generation Corvette) and i always looked at this truck
So when i was in the LHS i spotted this kit
And i decided to pick it up and buy it

And today i decided to start it
All of my other builds are in the painting stages and are drying at the moment
So i picked it from the stash (where it was for a day  ) and started building
But i am only at step 2 so for now i will just post the box and sprue shots

Image
This is the box art
It can be build with the standing exhaust but i will use the regular low exhaust on the left side of the truck
The parts for the standing exhaust don't look all that great

And here are the sprues
I don't know all the technical terms but i will try to identify most of the parts
Image
The cab parts

Image
The shield for the top of the cab (for high trailers)

Image
Some cab interior and bumper

Image
More cab interior parts

Image
Engine and chassis parts

Image
Chassis and drive train parts

Image
Wheels and tyres
The wheels are in a greyish styrene so i don't have the problem of stripping chrome paint
I also have some new Vallejo metallics to try out and i will use the chrome one for these wheels

Image
The clear parts
I already did a little bit of reseach and i can paint the sun visor either clear green or black
I haven't decided yet but the real demo truck had both colors over it's lifetime
But my dad painted it black so to keep in the nostalgic mood i think i will do the same

Image
And the decals
The number plates are still in the old style
Before we had the EU plates with the blue side telling you where the vehicle came from
And ofcourse as i am Dutch i will add the Dutch plates

So that is ehat you get in the kit
It is a rebox though as this kit was first sold back in the early 90's when the DAF 95 went in production
At the time it was one of the best long haul trucks in Europe and this version (380 ati) was the best of the line at the time
It had a 380 HP/BHP diesel engine so it was capable of long hauls and heavy loads
As with all trucks they are build to order
This is a 4x6 but there where 6x8 versions for really big and heavy loads
In the Netherlands we also have GINAF
I don't know if theh are linked or that one is a sub division of the other but GINAF builds offroad versions of this truck aswell and they even have a 10x10 dump truck based on this DAF 95

But before i keep yapping on
I started building it already and i am working on the chassis at the moment
Once i have made some more progres i will post the first update

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers
Mark

Hi guys
I think it is time for a little update
I already finished the construction of the trucks chassis
And now it is time for the cab but i haven't started that part yet
That requires me to paint the interior and it simply was too hot the past days so i couldn't do any painting

So for this update i will show the construction of the trucks engine and chassis

Image
The build starts with the basic frame work of the chassis

Image
Step 2 is a bit bigger
It starts with the axles

Image
And the placing of the leafsprings

Image
And finally placing the axles

Image
And the steering on the front

Image
Step 3 is the engine

Image
It also includes the radiator and the airduct for the clean air that goes into the engine

Image
Everything is connected

Image
From the front

Image
A test fit in the chassis
I want to be able to paint the engine as a seperate piece

Image
The next step is about finishing the suspension

Image
Step 5 is the building of the fueltank and the wheels
I skipped the wheels for now

Image
Step 6 is the placing of the mudguards for the front axle and the support for the cab

Image
Step 7 is for the exhaust and a airpressure tank
I picked the regular side mounted exhaust because most of these trucks have that feature and these parts look better then the vertical exhaust that is in the kit

Image
The fuel tank and the parts from the last photo where glued to the chassis

Image
More new parts where added like the disc that holds the trailer and the airfilter

Image
A view from above the chassis
It still is the same step

At this point the chassis is finished
It still needs a few parts but those are for the hinges of the cab
Those will be added once the cab goes on the chassis
So this is all i have for now
Sorry about the dark pucs but the parts are shinh black so not very easy to photograph
Thanks for stopping by and hopefully i will have some more to show soon
Untill next time
Cheers

Hi guys
Time for a little update
The construction of the truck is done
Allthough it is in sub assemblies at the moment
Because i didn't glue the engine in it's place so i can paint it i can't place the cab yet
But then again in real life the painted cabs where placed on the chassis and not painted once they where installed

But here are the last steps of the construction
Image
The cab is made up from several large parts for the sides and roof
But there are some grey parts for the grill and door sides

Image
The next step was the bottom of the cab

Image
Then the work moves back to the interior with roofliner and the dash

Image
Image
The next step is the construction of the cab interior

Image
The seats will be placed after the paint

Image
Then i painted the interior
The interior is pretty basic with 2 slightly different grey tones to have a difference between the plastic and fabric parts and some black for the seat suspension

Image
Then i placed the last parts
At this point i forgot the decal for the dash
But i did place it just before i put the cab interior in the exterior shell

Image
The cab was then glued together
This was pretty tricky because the sides could move while the glue was setting and it has to line up with the roof

Image
But in the end it worked out

Image
The interior and outer shell are ready to be put together

Image
The fit is pretty good

Image
Then i added all the smaller parts
The bumper is not glued on yet because it will block my access to the hinges of the cab
Once the cab is placed i will glue the bumper on the cab

Image
The big screen on the roof was placed
For some reason the supports where way too big so i left those out

Imagethe stack for the aircleaner was placed and the screens to enlarge the cab at the back

Image
The wheels where put together

Image
And then it was ready for the painting proces
Before i started priming i used a lot of masking fluid from Vallejo to cover the windows

At this point i am.in the middle of the painting proces but after a couple of coats of Tamiya X-1 i noticed the paint isn't very smooth
So that means i will have to polish it to make it smooth for the final couple of coats and repeat the polishing before i add a coat of Aqua gloss
But more on that in the next and possibly final update
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers

Wow you are flying along!!!
It is looking great, like a real truck :thumb2:
I really like the story behind why you chose this model

Thank you very much Scott
The kit is actually pretty good for a kit this old
But for now i will have to put it to the side
I need to finish my PTO builds first or i will miss the deadline

Hi guys
So finally after more then a month i have something to show for this build
In fact it is finished by now
The total lack of weathering is a bit strange for me but as the real one was a show vehicle so it was clean and not weathered at all

So once the truck was build i primed it with grey Ultimate primer and then the fun began
It had to be white after all
Image
After 12 light coats of flat white from tamiya it finally was white again
It then had to be polished as the flat white was not very smooth

Image
Then i painted all the other colors and glossed everything with several coats of aqua gloss

Image
Once the aqua gloss was dry i started to assemble the entire truck
At this point i noticed some damage i did to the hinges of the cab
Unfortunatly i couldn't fix it so i decided to simply glue the cab on the supports and loose the ability to tilt the cab

Image
Then the decals where added and the truck received yet another coat of aqua gloss making it 4 or 5 coats in total

Image
Image
Image
Image
I finally removed the masking from the clear parts and called it finished

I know i made some mistakes but this was my first truck ever (with the exception of some WWII trucks)
But in the end you learn from it and i can use the lessons when i build the other truck that still is in my stash

So thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care and untill next time
Cheers

Very nice build and your thread was very interesting to follow, I have had the Italeri Subaru team truck in my stash for about 12 years , it's about time I had a look at it, your build has tempted me to start this.
