1/72 Spitfire.

I've been building some models with my son,and we would like to put some gun smoke and some engine exhaust streaking effects on our 1/72 spitfire.
However I'm wondering which is the best way to approach this for the first time.

One is with oil paints and thinners or
two use powders?

This is my first build in nearly 30 years, my sons first build, and his introduction to the RAF.
