Airfix Avro Vulcan Bomber 1-72 scale

Post by BPC »

1. Airfix's Vulcan bomber, started Jan 16. The kit is the 1983 tool, with the dreaded raised panel lines. Lots of flash, and lots of tidying up to make good. Does lack detail throughout.

4. Jet intakes, poured white emulsion paint inside to deal with the seam lines, a bit messy but done the job.

5. Required 30g weigh down the front, 13 pennies sufficed.

8.Visit to Newark Air museum provided reference material.

10. Build all good up to this point. I tried out modulation on the panels, which turned the Vulcan into a museum piece that had been left out in the open for years, it was a good representation of the Newark Vulcan. I then decided to spruce it up, sanding some of the panels back to primer. I then had issues with the paint, reacting like paint stripper. Finally 4 weeks later, it resembled the actual Vulcan detailed in the kit. Lessons learned, don't over weather, and Humberol paints are no good for air brushing.

The finished article - :thumb2:

From sow's ear to silk purse! That's a great finish to a tough kit. Good stuff.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

I'd second that :th:

Some of these Airfix kits are not good, which is a shame as this is a great aircraft and more people would buy it, might explain why their in trouble again.

Hi,

I'm building this kit at the moment and I'm wondering whether to part ways with the painting guide. Very early on you have to paint the insides of the air intake boxes. The guide colour, "34", is Matt white. None of the photos I can see of XM558 show white there.

Did anybody else who's made this ignore that completely and camo the inside of the intakes?

Whilst this is not XH558, it is the one displayed at RAF Cosford. The intakes have camo leading to white...
