JonMWs MFH 1/20 Alfa Romeo Tipo 159

Post by JonMW »

I'm going to start off this build with one of these nice kits

Image

Image

Image
A few cast metal parts.

Image
A couple more

Image
A couple of frets of PE and decals

Image
Turned metal parts, rivets, pins, wires, tires and a bit of leather for the seat.

Image
And finally some resin parts

I want to get at least one project done before I start on this so it will probably be a week or so before I get started.

Finally made a small start in this last night. Started off with the wheels as I've wanted to see what they would look like since I bought the kit.

Image
The wheels consist of four turned aluminium parts, six PE, one cast metal and one rubber tire each.

Image
They where a lot easier to assemble then I thought they would be, just stack the PE parts in the right order and the aluminium spacer in the right order and push the rim halves together.

Image
The knock off nuts are cast white metal and needs to be polished, as they are tiny I used a pin vise to hold it and used a polished it with a brass wire brush.

Image
Two done two to go.

Image
The wheels out of the box, but after looking in my aftermarket stash I found one thing I could add.

Image
Turned aluminium air valves.

Image
So I drilled a 0.5 mm hole in the outer rim half.

Image
And glued the valve in.

Image
All done, I think theses are among the best looking 1/20 scale wheels I've seen.

Next up is start working on the engine.

Yea, MFH is the only multimedia kit manufacture that I have built that manages to make a kit that fits together out of the box.

Thanks!

It's time for a small update on this, I have started work on the engine. Most of the parts are build and painted, just missing wires, plumbing and some small bits.

Image
A good amount of parts, there are a couple of PE parts as well.

Image
Build up, everything fits perfectly after you drill out all of the locating holes.

Image
I pretty much always use Zero Paints Etch primer for these all metal parts as it gives a really good bond.

Image
Some of the parts where just polished using the Ultimate buffer stick.

Image

Image
And base painted in Vallejos new metal color aluminium, worked pretty well, the block was primered in black and the other small pats in grey to get a couple of different shades of aluminium. I still need to do a bit of detail painting and then add a pin wash.

It's really high time to get some work done on this one. I have assembled the frame and painted it flat black and then adding the front suspension that where painted dark aluminium. Then finally I put the engine in the frame. Next up is to start the rear suspension.

EasyEight96 wrote:Hi Jon great work on the suspension and the chassis there. Is it very difficult to build this kit??
A bit late reply, but anyway. I don't think the MFH kits are too bad considering it's a full metal/resin kit made it a pretty limited number. However this kit is a bit harder then some of the other ones I have build. Not sure when they released this one, I build their Ferrari F40 some time ago and that is a pretty old kit and the fit is pretty far from the level of the newer kits. I have the McLaren F1 in the stash, I think that is one of the last 1/24 kits they made before they started making 1/12 kits. And the fit on that looks really good.

So two months later and time for another update. I have done some on it but not as much as I would have liked. I managed to loose the gear lever, which made me not want to touch this for some time. I have managed to get the rear suspension done, which was a bit easier then the front even if it had more parts. Also got the fuel tanks on, next is fuel lines, radiator, seat, steering wheel and then finally body. If I push a couple other projects to the side I think I should be able to get this done in the remaining two weeks.

Image
The misplaced parts, I had put them in a zip lock bag as they are supposed to be polished so I wanted to keep them separate from the parts that where painted. I had then put that bag in another bigger bag full of empty bags and thrown it in the bottom of my closet. So it took quite a bit of searching to find them, but at least they hadn't gone up the vacuum cleaner so that's good.

Image

Image
As it stands at the moment.

Image
Did a quick test fit of the body parts, they need a bit of sanding, bending and cutting to get into place but I think it should look good.

Thanks guys.

Not much of an update, the chassis is pretty much done, just need to add the radiator and some final details plus touch up some paint that have been rubbed off. Have spend to day sanding the body parts to get it ready for painting. The fit is nice with only two seams that needs filling. Used CA glue for those as they are really small. Except for painting the body and a couple of small parts the only thing left to build is the grille. Have been putting this off a bit as it looks a bit daunting with the 44 PE parts that needs to interlock and be straight.

Image
It's on wheels

Image
The only two seams on the body that needs filling. I'm don't really like that they have both resin and metal parts in the body as it can be a bit hard to blend them together.

Image
Just a couple of PE parts.

I've spend most of the evening trying to get the grille done. It was not as bad as I thought, even if it took some time. There are still three parts missing in the middle under the hole for the starter crank. They are too long and wont fit in the opening, so I need cut them down a bit.

Got the chassis almost done, just need to add the seat and steering wheel and then clean up some of the paint and add a wash or two.

Image

Image

Also the body has been painted in Zero Paints Alfa Rosso, decaled and finished in ZP 2k clear.

Image

Next up is to paint the inside of the body in aluminium and then start the final assembly.

Thanks guys!

This is getting really close now, just need to add the final details and to some touch up painting and it's done. The kit comes with some really thin leather to wrap the seat in, gave it a try but couldn't get it to conform to the lines in the seat so I skipped it and just went with paint. I did use it for the wall behind the seat. The body have been a bit tricky to get in place as it's a lot of separate parts that need to line up and it's a tight fit around the frame. But I think it looks pretty good so I'm happy.
