Miniart 1/35 Su-122 Baute Panzer

Hi guys! I honestly expected to have posted a different build ages ago.... but my camera has proven to be totally inadequate. It was ok when a certain amount of distance was advisable when looking at my models, as they didn't bear too close scrutiny, but it is not up to scratch now my scratch building has improved a bit. I'm hoping to get a better (used) camera soon, but until then, these pics will have to do.

The Kit
This is Miniart's Su-122 Early production with interior. I'm building it as a captured machine in use with the Wehrmacht and undergoing repair in a barn/workshop. Very impressed, overall, with the kit so far. There are a couple of areas, like the fan blades and firewall/bulkheads which could be thinner, but I've scratch built new bulkheads out of thin plasticard,and I think I'll get away with the fan given the restricted view there will be of it when finished. The moulding and the fit of the parts in general is excellent.


Here is the Transmission:


And here is the engine and tranny together. I used 0.2mm and 0.3mm solder for the fuel lines, with Prime models excellent open hex nuts where they connect to the heads. The rocker/valve covers are the later sort, because... Germans!.. and also the correct covers are missing the connecting lugs in them for attaching the fuel lines and I was puzzled how to get around that. I also had the Germies repaint the covers in rotbraun. The other colours are, I think, the ones that the Russians used.

Here is the lower hull with scratch built transmission compartment bulkhead with the central section removed so a bit more of the engine is visible. I know it looks wonky here, but once the top hull goes on it does line up better. I have the radiators done, and am working on the batteries, but forgot to shoot them.




And here she is with the upper hull in poition, so you can see how much of the gubbins will be visible. I have drilled and cut the engine covers so that they can be displayed next to the vehicle.... but forgot to shoot them!

Thanks for the kind words guys. Can anyone recommend a good reference book for the Su-122? I've found plenty of pics of the parts it shares with the T-34, but am short of shots of the interior of the fighting compartment.

Cheers, Pete, but that's exactly the one I'm doing! LOL I found that site and the German evaluation (I'm guessing) pics are just so nice I was hooked! I'll be trying to the foundry stenciling free hand, as I haven't seen any decals or transfers of those that I can think of. Thanks mate!

Thanks, I really can't fault the kit at all, so far. The fit is excellent and although there are masses of sprues the layout of parts is pretty rational and not too much time is spent rifling through them. Cheers for looking in!
