Elefant TD tracks - guidehorn holes?

Post by Stokesy44 »

Hi All

I'm just about to start Tamiya's lovely 1/35 Elefant in the Winter SIG and I'm looking at the link and length tracks. The box art shows a circular hollow (possibly a through and through hole) in the guidehorns but the track links themselves don't have them. The horns are big enough to drill out the holes if I want to but I would like to confirm if its an indent or a an actual hole that's needed.

Problem is I cant find any pics on the old tinternet to confirm my suspicions. Do any of you track experts know if they had holes or not?

As ever, all help is much appreciated.
:cheers2:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

So I found a pic of a Ferdinand with sold track horns. I'm now going to search the book for a elefant with the same tracks

Ok so on to the elefant
Yes they have hollowed track horns. This was most likely a metal saving exercise as supplies where getting low towards mid to end of the war

This book is well worth getting lots of useful pictures

If you look at the holes they are actually elongated so if your careful you make them the same
Good luck with it, it's a good looking tank

Yeah, I spotted that. It may be beyond my current skill set (or my current tool kit) but I'll see. Just having the holes will be a good start as they will attract shadow and drybrushing effects when I weather the tracks.

In a diorama setting the holes would likely be choked with dried mud in any case. :cheers2:

Good point Digger. I've never got into building dioramas though so I think I may have to do the holes after all.

Thanks for attempting to spare me the pain :th:
