Tamiya 1/35 SU-76M

Post by Tat2bhoy »

Decided to do my first GB, using the SU-76M that I bought at Scale Scotland on Saturday. It looks a very nice kit that can be built straight OOB without using any aftermarket products. The sprues are all nicely individually bagged, witch is a nice touch. Individual and part built tracks with a jig to give them the natural sag. Not sure if I will build the figures or not
Looking forward to building this kit :th:

started on the fighting compartment today, building and painting it separately before adding the ammo, will complete it fully then mask it off before painting the rest, like doing the cockpit of an aircraft. Left some parts on the sprue to make it easier to hold while spraying and painting the details, primed it with Ultimate primer. hopefully this is the easiest way to do it :th:

More work on the interior, started with some chipping using the the Mig light and dark green from the colour modulation set, and followed by a wash using the AK enamel dark yellow wash
Image
Image
Made the chips by doing small areas with the light green first then the dark green on top so some light green still shows. They stand out quite a bit just now but after some light rusting and some weathering, they will blend in much better, well that's the plan anyway lol
Image
Image
Image
Image
Then gave all the recesses, panel lines a wash of the AK dark yellow.
Next a light rust on the chips and then put the interior all together

Built the tracks in separate sections, gave them a coat of flat black, then a dry brush of flat brown, then a dry brush of metallic grey before a wash of rust

Got started on the lower hull, got the return rollers fitted, painted it with the colour modulation again, darkest first then medium followed by the light green. Will clear coat it then give it a filter followed by some weathering before fitting the wheels and tracks

Doing the part I actually enjoy, painting the running gear :eeek: Painted the rubber rims first using Tamika rubber black, then using a stencil protected with some masking tape, as I use it for my work, sprayed the inner parts using the colour modulation once more, then highlighted the raised areas using the fourth paint in the set, the lightest green

Wasn't sure how the next part would go, but to my pleasure, they went together rather well, didn't have to do any modifications to the dry run that I done earlier.
Image
Image
Image

Once that was all dry, I mask the whole area ready for spraying the upper section.
Image
Image

Once masked up, started the colour modulation again.
Image
Image
Image

Then highlighted the raised detail with a dry brush of the lightest green.
Image

Then when dry, gave it all a coat of clear ready for the weathering proses

Can almost see light at the end of the tunnel, painted the tools ready to be fitted, used a couple of different browns for the handles as they wouldn't have all been made with the same wood, I could be wrong though :D
Image
I like to paint them still n the spruce then touch them up before fitting.

Image

Image
Gun fitted in place and some oil paint applied to it to bring it up to the same stage as the rest.

Image
Image
Image

Next stage will be some washes

Using washes from humbrol, AK and enamel thinners to give it washes of blues, greys and rusts then blended with thinners until I got a result I was happy with.Image
